VCD Freezes After 1 minute

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Produced a VCD on a 80minute CR-R using Dazzle DVC.

Is starts fine, but, at after the first minute it starts to skip frames. Another 20 seconds latter the image freezes (no matter the player), the counter go on a little longer, a blue screen comes up telling me that the disk is no longer in the drive (or it needs a cleaning).

In Burning other VCD's this is the first one to give me any trouble. The only hint of what may be wrong comes when I use AVI2MPG to play the VCD. At the freeze point I get the following message:

Waiting for Video Frame Update Checking Direct Draw Sample Update Completion Status Unable to Update IDirectDraw Sample

Then the frame counter goes wild.

VCD Information: Video: width: 320, height: 240 first frame: 0, number of frames: 64166

Audio: sample rate: 44.1 kHz channels: stereo bits per sample: 16 number of samples: 94419072

When played on a Philips CD-RW it was not noticed untill pressing a refresh button many times.

A second VCD of the same mpeg file frozed at the 2 minute mark.

Made another VCD from the same file with a shorter running time, that had no problem.

Plus made a 33 minute VCD on a 650MB/74 minute 4X compatible (recording speed also set to 4X) CR-R and has no problems. (the other VCD were made recording at 10X on a 80 minute/700MB CD-R

Someone else said it might be due to bad FAT. Did run Scandisk and found 1 lost cluster. But, I don't know what FAT has to do with buring a VCD onto a CD

What went wrong?

Play it in a stand-alone VCD player and I think it will just play fine. If so then there could be many thing wrong with your PC or CD- ROM drive.
