It's a good lens. It's worth whatever you paid for it.

I'm imagining you're referring to the M lens, not the R? It is a decent-enough lens optically although not up to the 3rd (E49) and current (E46). The biggest drawback to that lens is the rear element blocks the metering cell on the M6 and so makes use of the TTL meter impossible. Also, it must not be used on an M5 or CL at all, as the rear element will jam the meter stalk. In mint condition, perhaps US$800 as an uppermost figure. For $900-$1000 you can find a prime example of the 3rd (E49) version, and for $1100-1200 a current (E46).

According to my Hove Pocket Edition Leica lens book the serial number would place production to 1964. If you have the first generation 28mm Elmarit is certainly a collector's item indeed. You can tell by looking at the rear group which extends very far south beyong the lens mount like the Super Angulon. However I was under the impression these things were made in Wetzler. Perhaps you have the first prototype!

I sold one of the early 28 Elmarits, to a collector I assume, on ebay for $1500. I had it since it was new and it had been used but was in E+ condition. I bought a mint 4th version Elmarit 28 for $950, also on ebay, and love it. The older one would not meter on my new M6 but seems sought after by collectors and I had made a lot of good pictures with it. I kept the metal auxiliary finder but just got a deal on one of the new plastic ones. Which ever one I like best will stay and the other one will get sold with a 3rd version 28 Elmarit I have been using that is also a great lens. Regards,
