Colombians hold fourth Irishman By Jerry McDermott in Medellin and Richard Alleyne (Filed: 25/08/2001)

A FOURTH Irishman has been arrested in Colombia at a roadblock near the rebel-held area where three suspected IRA bomb-makers were held two weeks ago.

Last night the authorities refused to confirm whether he was linked to the others, who have been charged with "illegal training activities" - allegedly sharing weapons expertise with the FARC rebels - and using bogus passports. The man, who is believed to be 48, said that he had been teaching English in the rebel-held area in Huila province.

His passport and a three-month visa were believed to be in order. The DAS secret police, who were holding him, would not say why he had been arrested. But it is known that the security forces, on advice from Britain that IRA units are normally four strong, have been looking for another Irishman.

The bugger was probably just trying to find his way back to his tent, after a few hours of downing some pints, and was likely singing his head off as he zig-zaggged along the road. No wonder he got pinched.
