Fried dough?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I heard this on a program I was watching a few days ago and got to thinking about it. What are "monkey brains"? I thought they might be fried dough, similar to what I know as "dough gobs". From what I could figure out, "monkey brains" are a southern thing. If so, they sounded delicious!! Anyone have any recipes??

Bwah!!

I've heard of Monkey Bread, which are little balls of sweet bread dough that are put into a greased (clean) clay flowerpot, or a tube pan and baked.

I presume they had a picture of this item? Could it possibly be something like Funnel Cake, which is a sweet doughnut-like batter that is poured through a funnel (makes a small stream) into hot fat, usually swirled around erratically in sort of a circle, fried on both sides, drained, and served with powdered sugar. Is it anything like that? Maybe??

Monkey Brains. What, no French-Fried Parakeets?

Well, now you've got my curiosity up. I found page after page of entries for Monkey Brains on Google. So far, this is the most interesting entry --

3/4 oz. red Curacao 3/4 oz. Bailey's

Fill a small shot glass with the red curracuo then simply pour in the baileys over the back of a spoon.

This is a really cool looking shooter. When the baileys hits the glass it sort of curdles and looks like a little brain suspended in a jar of red blood. This is a great cocktail for halloween and it certainly hits the spot.

I'm betting that this isn't it....

Well I'm not gonna try it, Julie :-)!! Maybe monkey brains are like the funnel cake thing. I do remember them saying that it's fried in lard...yummy!? To tell ya the truth, I was watching "All My Children" and Dixie made this for her kids and Tad. Now everyone knows...I'm an All My Children addict :-).

Send me the URL for that 'drink' Julie, I want to see it.

It's okay Marcia -- I watch GH (although I get really bored when Luke and Laura are BOTH gone from show). I used to watch AMC all the time and still catch it once in awhile. You gotta watch out for those Martins -- it might be a Southern thing, but they also are mad about 'chicken fingers'. I think they just like to eat animal oddities! ;-)
