Since our resident bar keep has vanished, dougal where are ye? What yez all want to drink. Last night I had what is supposed to be the strongest beer in the world (14% alcohol) it was an austrian brew something along the lines of schamaseefr (ah divvent knaa) Needless the say it tasted like I'd just come in from walking across the moores washed me boots off and rung the cloth in a glass and drank it. It was terrible.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Vaux?? Oh no, you said 14%. But the taste was probably spot on - especially if you'd been thru a F&M foot-dip.

Troyes Story II

Well I'm off out now toto the Intertotototo final so I won't be able to join you on this thread - not unless someone wants toto supply me with one of those nice Nokia 9210 thingies.

So enjoy yourself, those of you unfortunate enough not toto be in Gods own Country on this pleasant, mild, cloudy, evening. I'm Strawberry bound now (and for those not in any clique at all that doesn't mean I'm suffering some bowel disorder due toto eating tootoo much fruit). Enjoy the game lads and lasses. Talk toto yiz later (if we win!)

HOWAY THE LADS!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

I'll be here tonight. Those of you going to the match give those frenchmen a big buuuuuhhhhhh and a NEWCASTLE HERE WE GO, from me !!!!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

I am going to Fat Bob's (!) Sports Bar in Brussels to watch the match tonight, but I think I may have come across a possible solution to our webcast problem. By accident I found out that Metro Radio now broadcasts permanently all day on the web. I am listening to it now (at 6.30 UK time) They've just said that the match coverage starts at 7.00 with special guest the one and only Alan Shearer. I hope it doesn't cut out at 7.45 when the match starts because of copyright or whatever problems with NTL etc, but if we're lucky it'll work right through. The URL is

http://relay.tornadonetworks.net/radio.php?station=metro

Alternatively you go to the new Metro Radio site

http://www.metroradio.co.uk/nav?action=home&id=1000

and then you click on the "listen live" button. I hope it works for all of you and I'll log back later to see how it went. Best wishes for a good web cast.

Thanks Deb. Just went through the only sites I can think of off te top of my head. Sporting Life doesn't have one dedicated to us, but they do have a clockwatch thingy that will include all "other" games (i.e. non-premiership). Looks as though I'll be seeing more abou the Worthless cup than the Intertoto so will be relying on those of you with webcast/radio/television! :-)

Singapore Slinging in, none of that $h!te for me like, although I'm not gonna drink bottled Tiger anymore - during the Chewsea game, the last swig of the last bottle had a dead(?) cockroach in it, mind you, I've had a permanent stiffy ever since then (Chinese medicine!)!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

yeah, we must have one more. A draw and we're out

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Bud, already underway, 1-0 us after about eight minutes. Nobby with a 22 yarder

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Looks like they are coming at us from Bartons side, two corners, clear from bellamy, now attacking.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

They are putting us under pressure - no push over for sure!!!

More shots being fired in.

Another corner for them - played out.

Cleared by Dabz, Nee problem

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Ok, let's not go back to old habits, lads. What do we do when we score the first goal? No, not sit back and defend until the final whistle! Who said that? Hmph.

After scoring the first goal we.....go for another goal. Very good chilluns! Now go do it!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Bellamy almost scored

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Still putting us under pressure.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

First goal against us was acceptable - good strike, swerving ball. Second one was appaling - we just let them take it. (:o(

Commentators bleating on about the players looking tired - what twaddle...we are just getting rattled into being dead sloppy.(:o(

OK Lads and lasses let's not spoil this thread by responding to idiots. IGNORE

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

I'm not surprised those who played on Sunday are a bit tired, but surely they shouldn't be that knackered this early? Where are they over-running us? Defence? Midfield? argh.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Can u f'ing believe it, I just turned the telly on and there's wor game, on LIVE. The commentary's off ("poblem at source") but I can hear the crowd = better still (a real, LIVE game!).

Only problem is, as soon as I turned the TV on Troyes got their second :-(

COME ON!!!!!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Hey pete, sound advice. Divvent worry man, lots of football left.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

That's it - no webcast!!!!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Thanks, Deb. Keep em coming!

Ignore who, Pete? I've got this newfangled filter thingy that only allows me to see postings in black and white. ;-)))

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

To be honest Ciara, both! They are actually very quick in attack, and it is just throwing us, especially the defense, into a panic.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Seems like a case of lets do it again, all over them first five minutes, then they fart around and sit back and let them come...you would think they would learn wouldn't you. Now we must score two and keep them out as well

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Where will we find another 2 goals? Frankly this is appalling and I think Given is having a nightmare, no confidence. (I was just sticking him for him the other day as well......)

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

So you're the jinx, Bud? Turn off your tv for the Toon! ;-)

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Me? Can you only join a match thread if you're listening on web? If so I'll go - anything to assist!!!!!!!! I only logged on for some solace from black and white brothers and sisters in this time of despair!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Corner to us....

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Hearing about a panicky defence when Dabs is playing scare me. :-(

GET IT TOGETHER LADS!! Plenty of time left to win this one!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Bellamy almost scores, hits the keepers legs

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Don't we need 4 goals ? to be ahead

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

LOL on the filter Ciara :-))

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

only two deb

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

We just have to score one more than them. Away goals only count in a tie.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Don`t be daft Lynda....you stay right where you are. I think we may all need moral support.

This is pretty grim...everytime they attack they look as though they could score....our defence is stretched to the limit.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Ciara, anything for acouple of shots of JD \_/ \_/ ;-)

2 goals needed :-)

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

That's right, so we need to score two, as long as they don't score again, or we'll need three, etc etc

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

If we take enough shots at goal, some of them are bound to go in. Right?! Keep shooting!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

ahhhhh np then :) i was a bit worried with 4 tho ;)

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

It's the matchday thread that keeps us sane. Or perhaps turns us into raging alcoholics. Another drink, please. ;-)

Half time...Boo's all around the ground. Shearer says that's not fair.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Their second goal (camera behind their goal); goal kick, Dabs wins header, only to head it straight to their unmarked forward who takes it on and easily slots it passed Given :-(

Look. If they can score 3 goals in one match, so can we. LET"S GOOOO!!!!!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

cept we need 4 ciara

useless fin cuntz

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Warren Barton ($hiTe), caught in possession - we are useless, Ameobi shouldn't be on the pitch.

The crowd's booing Barton's every touch now, he's getting the blame for goal's 2 & 3 :-(

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

3-1 down, bring on the subs, Bernard please, Gavilan and Bassedas, let's try some skill instead of running and huffing and puffing. Nowt to lose now.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Warren Barton is being booed by you lot.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Nope, just 3 Loony. For now. We've already got 1.

BTW if Dabs knocked the ball at the opposing forward for their 2nd goal, how is it Barton's fault? I'm missing something here.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Can I just say, they are a much better team than us. End of story unfortunately.

Oh I can see tomorrow's headlines now. End of the world apparently, the club will fall down around Bobby's ears cos we're not in Europe. Stay defiant everyone!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

"Nowt to lose...", only a place in Europe :-(

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Dreadful mistake by Barton gifted them the opportunity to score. We don`t look great I have to say.

Goal scoring chance for Ameobi - pretty good one, unfortunately he went to kick the ball and missed. He didn`t miss kick it, he missed it all together!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Ciara, Barton was supposed to be marking the guy that scored :-(

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

That's alright, we can now concentrate on the PL and two domestic cup competitions...and qualifying for Europe through the front door next year.

Oooo....is that pint half full? :-)

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

3-1 down Bud, we are already out of Europe unless we get three, and this lot don't fill me with confidence, so let the kids play.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

I think the booing is a bit uncalled for. We are just not nearly as good as them. although I except they are playing pretty poorly!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Bring on the subs, now. nothing to lose. really looking forward to tomorrow night, for obvious reasons, gloves off, no prisoners.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Agree with ya there, Pete. We should be looking forward to Sunday now and resting a few players, or giving playing time to those who might do a better job. We aren't going to get 3 goals out of the bunch out there now. Give 3 others a chance.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

It's not over yet...... i see Dabs getting a header in ........ LuaX2 gettin 1 in at least and the other from Nobby or Bellamy ... DOIT!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

They almost scored again, Barton's 'man' gets another free cross in :-(

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Barton decided to try to keep the ball in play down the line - just about level with the penalty spot. He fluffed it, Troyes player hoofed it into the box, and I think Dabs booted it at the player next to him (also wearing blue). Heyho........don`t much like Europe anyway!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Is it usual on these threads to have the mentally challenged waiting around everytime something goes wrong? Why am I suprised, there is clearly nothing to do in Sunderland.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Looks like its all ower...lost on the away goals rule. Good comeback lads, shouldn't have been in the hole in the first place.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

a classic comeback ala KK - breathtaking excitement

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Damn. :-( But at least we showed some fight. That's a vast improvement over last season. Now if we tighten up defence and teach everyone where the goal is, we'll be doing fine. Roll on Sunday!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

I predict we get in the front door next year........night all.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

The Toon Army deserve better, we were brilliant after the substitutions, hope is not lost.

We scored 3 and conceded none after WB was subbed, say no more.

Good night all, 4.45am. here.

WE'LL DO THE MACKEMS !!!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

"we were one goal too many in defence" CLASS! ha ah

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Deb, good point in concentrating on the league and to qualify for europe in a real way rather than winning the "golden nuggett trophy"

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Yeah...what a way to be out of Europe this season, but at least we have a good view about how this team should re-build. We need more young players on the field, more energy more better pressure. The second half is quite good for BR to learn how to mixed our squad for the next battle against the SMB's!

As for the sick lad with many fake e-mails around us tonight, don't dreamed of tonight would be the same night next Sunday!

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

We just got back from the bar. Saw the first 20 minutes then we ended up having to watch Leeds-Arsenal 'cos the satellite couldn't show the two games on different screens, and we had a vote and the Arsenals won. Bar went very quiet when Harte scored Ha Ha, but they had a laugh at us when we switched over at half time and it was 2-1. We saw 10 minutes when Leeds were on half time, and all of a sudden it was 3-1. We looked bad and Troyes all of a sudden seemed at ease. Gousse and the number 8 who scored the third look good players. Raced back home and look what we missed. Couldn't believe it when we switched on the car radio and we heard 4 -1. For the first 20 minutes we looked in control and Troyes were getting caught in possession, so what happened in between? Anyway, we are unbeaten in Europe in 2001-2002!!! Bring on the SMBs.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Shearer says hes going to play 45 minutes tomorrow and see how it goes ..... then he has his fingers crossed to play some on Sunday.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Just watched it on TV- best entertainment ive had in a long time......beats watching a few boring UEFA cup matches and then losing in the semi final- YBR has found a couple of great subs in LuaLua and Bernard.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

We'll what an fffing shambles. Dont let the comeback put a rosy tint on this, we were a disgrace!!! Midfield hadnt a clue, Lee and Speed need to be subs only. Solano scored the goal and that was it. Given had a total mare, his confidence is shot to pieces. Barton needs to be replaced by Griffin and we need some good midfielders who can pass the ball to a black and white!!! To Bobby, why have bassedas on the bench and play quinn who is a pile of shite is beyond me. When Bernard came on he was a breath of fresh air, ran at their players and they didn't know what to do!!! If Bobby doesnt sign some midfielders then this season is going to be like the last. Troyes are a good passing team and they just passed through the midfield to their fowards. Im going to stop now as Im sure other people will want their say. Very sad indeed!! AM

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

I agree to a point. he HAS to drop Barton for Griffin. Plus O Brien needs to be in the side. I bet he doesn't though. He'll stick with Given desite the fact he was clearly to blame for 2 of those goals at least.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

One other thing, we started to hit long balls forward all the time, this is pointless as Ameobi is the only one who can win a ball and this is very rare. Play it down the channels, bellamy and ameobi have pace, use it. I was impressed with Bellamy's work rate and he looks to be a good player. Just needs a bit of luck in front of goal!! AM

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Just got back after a few necessary bevvies.

Wrote one word in my diary on the way home (to massively mis-quote Blackadder): Bugger.

Have to agree with 'Awaymag' all the way.

Until the customary triple-substitution we were a disgrace.

Their second goal (or was it the third - they've all welded together in my memory) was indeed the sort of howler from Barton that the term 'schoolboy error' could have been invented for. I was sat right behind the goal in the John Hall Stand and got what seems a slow- motion view of it: instead of hoofing it out of play, or indeed instead of doing anything whatsoever he fannied about until the ball ended up netbound.

I must correct one point - Wozzer was indeed intially booed by a contingent of tw@ts (no doubt the ones that buggered off after their fouth goal) the next time he had the ball after his cock-up but was subsequently cheered by the decent majority. He does try, bless him.

I would have afforded some respect to Troyes if it hadn't been for their Lazarus time-wasting tactics (players being stretchered-off during extra-time then subsequently discovering they've never been healthier).

Oh well, we've now been set back a year according to Rushworth in today's (yesterday's - ?)Journal. Another 2000-2001 season? Let's hope he doesn't buy Quinn this time round.
