Today, August 21, the Catholic Church honors, in a special way, the following friends of God, saints whose souls are now in heaven:

Pope St. Pius X (Italian "Pope of the Blessed Sacrament," reigned 1903-1914)
St. Bernard Tolomeo (Italian monk, founder of Congregation of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Olivet, d. 1348)
St. Gilbert (French Benedictine monk, d. 1185)
St. Hardulph (English)
St. Joseph Nien Vien (Vietnamese priest, beheaded in 1838 [canonized in 1988])

St. Pius X wrote: "My hope is in Christ, who strengthens the weakest by His divine help. I can do all in Him who strengthens me. His Power is infinite, and if I lean on him, it will be mine. His Wisdom is infinite, and if I look to Him for counsel, I shall not be deceived. His Goodness is infinite, and if my trust is stayed in Him, I shall not be abandoned."

Prayer for the intercession of St. Pius X:
"Glorious Pope of the Eucharist, Saint Pius X, you sought 'to restore all things in Christ.' Obtain for me a true love of Jesus so that I may live only for Him. Help me to acquire a lively fervor and a sincere will to strive for sanctity of life, and that I may avail myself of the riches of the Holy Eucharist in sacrifice and sacrament. By your love for Mary, mother and queen of all, inflame my heart with tender devotion to her. Blessed model of the priesthood, obtain for us holy, dedicated priests, and increase vocations to the religious life. Dispel confusion and hatred and anxiety, and incline our hearts to peace and concord. so that all nations will place themselves under the sweet reign of Christ. Amen. Saint Pius X, pray for me."

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

Greetings, John:

I work with the Christian artist Timothy P. Schmalz who is doing a schulpture entitled, "One Body". The sculpture depicts the risen Christ surrounded by two hundred identifiable Catholic saints. I am looking for a picture or illustration of St. Joseph Nien Vien as a reference for Tim, so that he might include St. Joseph's likeness in the sculpture. Any ideas? Also, Tim is trying to identify other ethnic saints for the sculpture. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Debbie Frey, Ontario, Canada

Hello, Debbie.

I'm sorry, but I have been unable to locate any artistic depictions of St. Joseph Nien Vien.
However, I have a couple of leads for you to pursue. Since you are in Ontario, you may want to contact the following group for help:
Vietnamese Catholic Community
252 Argyle Ave
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

cdcgvn@ottawa.com

If the folks in Ottawa cannot help you, you may find something via the long list of contacts at this site.

I know that you have written the same note (posted above) to my private e-mail address. Please send me another note to that address with a bit more specific information. (That is, I'm not sure what you meant by saying that "Tim is trying to identify other ethnic saints for the sculpture," so I need to discuss that with you privately.)

God bless you.
John

May our Lady of Knock pray for the unborn, and may God in His infinite mercy save some babies from being slaughtered today.

Holy Jesus I beg of Thee. If you didn't mix the molecules right in the air we couldn't even breathe. We are dependant on you for every breath of air we take.
