Club Links Newcastle United TOON TO TALK OVER ARGENTINE TRANSFER

NEWCASTLE are being linked with a move for Leandro Romagnoli, with San Lorenzo president Fernando Miele on his way to England to discuss the transfer. The gifted young midfielder had been tracked by a number of clubs earlier in the summer, but no deal came about and Newcastle have now entered the race.

Miele is already in Europe trying to sort out a deal with Betis for the sale of Romagnoli`s team-mate Bernardo Romeo, but that transfer has been halted as the Spaniards are not willing to make a purchase until December at the earliest.

San Lorenzo, though, are desperate for funds and are prepared to sell Romagnoli to The Magpies, who have been alerted to his talents by their South American network of contacts.

Magpies boss Bobby Robson is no stranger to raiding South America, having brought in Clarence Acuna, Christian Bassedas and Diego Gavilan, and it would seem that he is set to negotiate another transfer when Miele arrives in Tyneside.

The 20-year-old made his debut for San Lorenzo in 1998, and quickly established himself as a creative central midfielder - a position Newcastle have yet to really fill despite the captures of Acuna and Bassedas.
