There's a place for us, a time and a place for us.

A MATH+1ForumCon (damn, is that awkward) has been proposed.

Atlanta seems to be the frontrunner. Which is always good for me, seeing as how I am singlehandly keeping AirTran afloat.

So: when? where? with a bridal shower for T involved? with cheese? with alcohol? karaoke? trivia?

Answers

Sorry that my obsession for a MATH+1ForumCon took over the Magic 8 Ball thread. I am very much for this idea. Though I agree that the name is clumsy and must be rethunk.

What a great jumping-off point...

Wait, is this really happening? Because if it is, I need to start saving cheese and liquor.

And memorizing Trivial Pursuit cards, clearly.

I suggest we lean towards northeast...like towards Marietta. You know, it's beautiful and out of the city and...and...and....

it's where my mommy lives.

But anywhere in that area, I'm there. I'll front moonpies and Shiner Bock if I can get it, Rolling Rock if I can't. And I'll chip in for Fellini's pizza, but if I have to go into Buckhead to pick it up, I'll bitch like mad.

See, I'd like nothing more than meeting a whole bunch of cool strangers, but how does a poor, unemployed loser find her way to Atlanta?

WriterGirl - could I stow away in your luggage?

-- Anonymous, August 20, 2001

Beth - vee haff vays! like... uh... Greyhound. Or Big Crazy Road Trip.

AB, start saving the cheese and liquor. I will start making the paper hats.

You know, I never thought I'd say this, and maybe my mind is warped not that my driver's license says "SMYRNA," but I kind of like Cobb County.

Anyway. I'm just glad y'all want to do this in Atlanta.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Well, I'm a little biased because I have people in the area also, but I think it makes sense:

T and her Chris are there, Allison and MOC Chris are there, WG and Robyn have fam there...

Plus I'm way serious about a shower - so if somebody thinks thats goofy or implausible, let me know before I start planning champagne punch and asparagus & cream cheese sandwiches cut into heart shapes and shit.

But... what would T tell Chris?

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

But... what would T tell Chris?

An excellent question.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

That's a very good questions. Chris knows Hannah Beth, and Al and the MOC, of course, and he and Mike have emailed about fantasy baseball, and the Chao-lentine is in our kitchen, and he knows that I'm friends with Naked Hannah because we, ahem, grew up in the same part of Texas. And he and WG have corresponded about RCW, and he knows that I have a friend in Austin who is involved in politics and we, ahem, met through our political jobs.

Actually, Chris knows about almost all y'all. He just doesn't know about the OLJ thing. He thinks the internet is used primarily for email, fantasy baseball, news, and that most everyone else uses it for deviant activity.

T, I don't want to frighten you, but you are living smack dab in the middle of my old stomping grounds. If you look carefully, you might be able to follow a trail of real old roaches and cigarette butts to one of my old houses.

And while I know that you know all about our Julia Roberts thang, are you also aware that the girl who fucked Rob Lowe on video tape went to high school in Smyrna? To my high school. Oakwood High.

All Hail Smyrna. And I loved my years in Cobb County, high suicide rate be damned.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

. . . most everyone else uses it for deviant activity.

Hee! I'll keep that in mind next time I'm shopping on eBay for WWII posters.

Seriously, right now I'm more concerned about the "when" than the "where." September is a bad month for me, and the first ten days in October I'll be overseas.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Robyn, not to diss Smyrna, The Jonquil City, but I must offer the disclaimer that we live ITP and our area code is 404. We're unincorporated Cobb. In fact, Chris' firm went to litigation with the city of Smyrna when they wanted to annex us. We are Smyrna tax free.

Having said that, I am very enamored with the Smyrna library.

Seriously. I am starting to love Cobb, especially when I think of all the bullshit I had to deal with when I was living in the City of Atlanta part of DeKalb. I had to deal with the crap from the city (except for our truly stellar city council rep, Cathy Woolard, who honestly does kick public service ass) AND the county. It took me three and a half hours to register my car in DeKalb. In Cobb, it took twenty minutes, including wait time, for me to register both of our cars. And the people there were so nice, and the building wasn't stinky, or anything like that. I really am starting to love Cobb.

I didn't know that about the sucide rate, though - maybe there's a correlation with Kennesaw's mandatory gun ownership for homeowners law.

Anyway. Back to the topic at hand. MATH+1 con. Discuss.

WG brought up a good sticky point. Time frame?

I also am no good for September or October. Plus, I figured after anyway since I know a couple of youse will be at JournalCon in Chicago mid-October, right?

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

2002 looks good for me.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Uh, listen up, AB. You'll be in Atlanta before 2002, MATHCon or not.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Don't go breakin' my heart, Lowe. You know I'm briz-noke.

Seriously, though, y'all--I have JournalCon planned for October, and I don't foresee frivolous trips in the near future after that. Perhaps we should consult the Magic 8.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

How does early November sound? It's not a bad time to be in the ATL, weather-wise. It may conflict with my scheming to get The Smoker to come visit me in NYC, but I think he'd thank y'all for that. (I know my roommate would.) I don't know exactly when JournalCon is; I just know I'm not getting back to the States till the 10th.

AB, AirTran has Dallas-to- Atlanta on sale for $80 one way. This particular sale only runs till the 28th, but I bought The Smoker tickets before it started for $85 each way, about $180 round trip with taxes.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Sorry, the 10th of October.

-- Anonymous, August 21, 2001

Okay, I know that air travel is now even dicier than before, but I, for one, want this to happen.

-- Anonymous, September 19, 2001

Does everyone here understand that Ty (oh sweet, beautiful Ty) lives in Atlanta? Can we not come up with a reason to hire a really sexy carpenter for our con?

Vern lives there, too, evidently. We could ask him to bring us some wheat grass or something.

-- Anonymous, September 19, 2001

I continue to champion the ForumCon cause . . . discounts to Vegas hotels are apparently huge, with $300 rooms going for $100, and the like.

Of course, I may just call The Smoker and point out that eloping will probably never be cheaper.

-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001

And I could probably make it to Vegas. And Hannah and T and I already know where we can get 2 for 1 Mimosas.

-- Anonymous, October 01, 2001

Vegas? I'd go to Vegas. (I'm on the west coast.) I REALLY want to go to Vegas, I haven't been there since before all the new hotels.

If I may plug for a date, the 1st and 2nd of December, a weekend, is convenient 'cuz I'll be in Arizona the week prior.

-- Anonymous, October 01, 2001

Oh, y'all. Do we have to do this in Vegas? I like it and all, but I'll be there in December for work and damn, Vegas is expensive as hell. And, I can't bear to see the sight of one more bride schlepping through the casino losing nickles by the dollar in the Austin Powers slot machines.

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2001

I think it's safe to assume that if this does happen, it won't be till 2002. For one, I have no more days off that aren't already allocated. Also, what with AB, Al and T recently becoming un-Ladies of Leisure, it might be best to give it a few months, yes?

And for the record, I vote for Atlanta. I love Vegas more than the next person, but no sane girl needs to go there four times in a year.

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2001

I agree with everything Hannah just said. So, to recap: No 2001, wait until 2002, Vegas bad, Atlanta good.

Damn MATH, always sticking together.

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2001

Lord, yes. I'd go to Columbus before I went to Vegas again. I definitely want to wait a while before I go there again. I still don't feel clean since that last night in Tong's.

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2001

I'm still going to be in Atlanta the week after xmas (visiting Mommy out in Marietta), so if anyone is up for a mini-con, I'll be happy to supply the tequila.

-- Anonymous, October 02, 2001

I'll be in Dallas from Dec. 23rd-29th and then in the ATL till January 1st.

Of course, I'm hoping to be permanently there by mid-2002, and I have an easier time coming down than others.

-- Anonymous, October 03, 2001

Bumping this up because it's now 2002.

-- Anonymous, February 14, 2002

Peeps, I am bumping this up again because

1) a shower for Al, MOC, Mike, and SheWhoWillMarryMike (should she want to participate) seems like a good and necessary thing; and

2) the population of Atlanta might -- just might -- increase towards the end of summer.

Y'all know you all want to get together and play the Iron Chef and/or Trading Spaces drinking game. Obviously it can't be the first weekend of October, since that's JournalCon, but there are lots of other weekends . . .

-- Anonymous, March 26, 2002

I'm always ready to go to Atlanta, and as an engaged member of the group (but more of an eloper (elopee?) than a wedding planner), I am in.

How much Stoli Vanil will it take to get everyone in the same place at the same time?

-- Anonymous, March 26, 2002

Oh, I'm so in for a trip to Atlanta. I was already planning one anyway.

-- Anonymous, March 26, 2002

How much Stoli Vanil will it take to get everyone in the same place at the same time?

I don't know, but I'll buy Pineapple's taxman a bottle.

-- Anonymous, March 26, 2002

Based on the discussion on the etiquette thread, I hereby declare that any party for Al/MOC/Mike/SheWhoWillMarryMike, if it happens, would not be a shower but a Stoli-Vanil-and-cheese orgy.

'Cause eatin' . . . I shouldn't even have to say it, now, should I?

-- Anonymous, March 27, 2002

Depending on when..

do we have dates in mind, my lovelies?
