What sort of stories did Edgar Allan Poe write?
-- Anonymous, August 20, 2001
A wide variety typical of nineteenth century magazine literature, dark romantic, humorous, mystical tales, and especially his most original innovation- the modern detective story. See for yourself at www.eapoe.org and other sites. This is fairly important since most short anthologies seem to brand Poe as a horror writer. In larger anthologies readers seem to skip over or become confused at other types of tales. Certain things seem to characterize Poe's style and subject matter, but you should read them first. His only novel and his essays, marginalia and reviews are a must too. His poems also extend beyond the few most popular examples.
