A social problem...?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I've been following the thread over on CS (What Have We Done To Ourselves?) and just had to post what was printed on a church program that I've had taped to my fridge for months!

"We've multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom and lie too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life, but not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbors. We've conquered outer space, but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less; plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We have higher incomes, but lower morals, more acquaintances, but fewer friends, more effort, but less success. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication. We've become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men and short character; steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure and less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition. These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. It is a time when there is much in the show window, but nothing in the stockroom!

Sorry it is so long. I stop and read this almost everyday as I'm working in my kitchen, and I realize just how lucky I am to be living the "country life" AND to have a wonderful family and great friends!!!!

I hear you Marcia..........had one of those days today where you just can't hardly believe you are so fortunate. Kind of a "Martha Stewart" moment. Almost started a thread over on cs just to lighten the mood. Still might. Sat down to a dinner fit for a king and queen today. Steak, buttered corn, home baked bread that we had ground our own wheat, squash cooked and sweetened with our own maple syrup, beets, pickles, fresh sqeezed apple cider. The only thing on the table,(which by the way was a beauty that was LEFT by some people at an old house we had years ago, handmedown chairs, table cloth and placemats from goodwill) that was not our own was the salt. Come on MARTHA and match that!!!
