whats the most quietest geese to keep

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hey everyone. I want to get a geese to keep as a guard. I heard about them being very successful. The only thing is this. I have a yard of about 30X30. I have an aviary about 12X12 that i keep beautiful parrots in. I would like the geese to act as watch dogs for these parrots. But the area i live in people talk... They talk a lot. What i mean is this. I live in Canada so there are geese everywhere. I dont want the geese to qwak there mouths off and wake the neighbors. I dont know much about geese. Are they really that noisy and are they quiet at night? If your inside your house and you have a geese outside will it wake you up? Is there a law against keeping geese? If i aquire one can people take it away because its too noisy? Should i house it inside the avairy with the other parrots? Well thats about it. its a lot questions heee hee. i just want to get the facts before i get the bird.

Quiet geese? Is there such a thing? If you want them for gaurd animals why would you want them quiet?

If I were you I would check into the local laws concerning the keeping of geese in your yard. The city hall should be able to give you that information.

Geese do sleep. When the sun goes down, mine get quiet, although they will make quiet a bit of noise if there is a stranger in the area and some can get mean. (They will bite.) I have 8 right now and they stick together in a flock. They follow each other around the yard and are lots of fun to watch.

Hmmm. I think geese could bring disease into your aviary. They might not, but that's one risk you probably want to consider. Another thought -- do you want your parrots learning to imitate goose sounds (unless your parrots are not good mimics, this is very likely to happen). My parrot imitates other birds -- and she does it LOUDER than they do. Then there is the question of how aggressive geese would be towards your parrots. I know parrot can bite really hard, but I still think a goose could inflict a lot of damage on smaller parrots.

I wouldn't advise housing the goose/geese in the parrot aviary -- I think it would cause too many problems. I'm curious, do your neighbors complain about the noise from your parrots?

I don't think you'll know the answer to your parrot/goose relationship until you try it. Since a goose is so much larger than a parrot I wouldn't house them in the same aviary (although the geese are land/water animals and the parrots are probably arborial). However, I don't know how they would get along when it came to making noise. My caique (small parrot) and one of my dogs have a guardian relationship. The dog is going deaf and doesn't always hear people coming up the drive any more, but the caique will call when she hears a car and the dog will bark whenever the parrot calls. Unfortunately, the dog can't tell when the caique is greeting a visitor and when she is greeting the goats, so the dog barks a lot more now than she used to! You may find that the parrots and the geese set each other off a lot, or you may find that they make each other feel safer and only go off if something is amiss. I'm afraid that will be an individualistic thing with your particular birds. Of course, depending on whether you have cockatoos or parakeets, the parrots may be louder than the geese.

As long as the geese are not housed in the aviary with the parrots, I don't think they will spread any diseases to them.

Chhun, post this question(if you are serious)on THE PUULTRY CONNECTION BOARD, General Waterfowl forum. Lots of experts on geese there and lots of those people keep other birds. If you are in Canada do you heat your aviary? I'm guessing the geese will be outside the aviary but inside your yard. Right? Geese and ducks are cold weather birds and will not do well if kept too warm. How about humidity for the parrots? I am curious how they do up there if you heat things up for them it is usually too dry. The first thing you need to do is get a good book on geese so you can care for them properly. There are miniature geese which are quite small and still good at guarding. Keep in mind that geese live a long time so are a long term investment, and that in the breeding season they will run you off too! so, study geese, ask lots of questions, get a good book!

I once had a speckled belly goose, had him for over 5 years and he was just as quite as the mallard duck who accompanied him on a peice of driftwood. They made for a beautiful mount.....
