EOS 100- good purchase?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Seen an EOS 100 in a local shop. Seeking a decent solid robust EOS without breaking the bank, and this seems reasonable. Anyone give me any recommendations or warnings re. this model? Things that recommend it, or warnings about things to watch out for?

Thanks in advance JIM

The EOS 100 (original Elan in North America) is a good camera. It has the rear Quick Control Dial and for that reason I prefer it to the 10/10s wich is better in most other respects. The 100 is about as quiet as the new 30/Elan 7. Quieter than the very quiet 5/A2. It shoots 3 fps, has one cross type AF sensor that is very sensitive, even in low light. However, AF start is not as fast as the newer cameras. It does have a near IR AF assit light. The built in flash zooms to match the lens length and the camera offers Flash Exposure Compensation for it, unfortunatly, FEC does not control external units. It is A-TTL compatible but not E-TTL.

On the down side, it has the nearly the same problem with breaking Command Dials as the 5/A2 does. They are nearly the same design. Fortunatly, this doesn't effect all of them and most of them that were going to break, already have.

The EOS 50/Elan II was definitly a step up, but the 100 is still a very nice camera. I use one as a back up for weddings.

I still have my old Elan after 10 years and haven't had any problems with the Command dial (unlike one of my A2s). Its taken plenty of knocks and keeps on tickin.

However, some batches have shutter mechanism lube that deteriorates after 5 or 6 years. This is easy to check as the symptom is oil on the shutter blades. In such cases, Canon recommends shutter replacement for $150. Sometimes you can clean it and it will be ok. Without cleaning or replacement eventually the shutter fails. However, if the shutter is oil free, it ain't one of the bad ones as this camera has been out of production since 1994.

I've written up some extensive blah-blah on the subject, if you're interested in details.

I'm having some problems with my ISP, so if you can't access the site try waiting a day and trying again - the new site IP is still propagating.
