Today, August 19 , the Catholic Church honors, in a special way, the following friends of God, saints whose souls are now in heaven:

St. John Eudes (French priest, founder of congregation now called Eudists, d. 1680)
St. Ezekiel Moreno Y Diaz (Spanish missionary, bishop in Colombia, d. 1906 [canonized 1992])
St. Guenninus (French bishop, 7th century)
Bl. Guerricus (French Cistercian abbot, c. 1155)
St. Hugh Green (English priest, hanged in 1642)
Bl. James Denxi, Bl. Joachim Firayama-Diz, Bl. John Foyamon, Bl. John Nangata, and Bl. John Yano (Japanese sailors, beheaded in 1622 at Nagasaki)
St. Louis of Toulouse (French nobleman, later Franciscan friar and bishop, d. 1297)
St. Magnus (French governor, widower, monk, and bishop, d. 660)
St. Mochta (Irish bishop)
St. Sebaldus (Benedictine hermit, later missionary to Germany, c. 770)

St. John Eudes is known for his great devotion to, and writings about the hearts of Jesus and Mary. Here are two brief excerpts from his works:
"The Christian life is a continuation and completion of the life of Christ in us. We should be so many Christs here on earth, continuing His life and His works, laboring and suffering in a holy and divine manner in the spirit of Jesus."
"The air that we breathe, the bread that we eat, the heart which throbs in our bosoms, are not more necessary for man that he may live as a human being, than is prayer for the Christian that he may live as a Christian."

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John
