I have downloaded a few .avi files but have always noticed something, either it has audio but no picture or picture with no audio. How can this be corrected?

you might need to download a specific codec in order to get audio or video

Is there an easy or even a reasonable way to determine what codec to start looking for? The info at the bottom of the MS Mplayer2 flashes by so quickly that I don't know if the info I want is even there.
