Early aquariums/1880

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

A man I've been tracing in 1880 was listed in the census as "keeper of aquarium". His name was Charles Schumann, and in 1860 had lived in the household of Augustus Jacoby, a pioneer of Humboldt County(Union Town, now Arcata). Does anyone have any knowledge of early aquariums in the San Francisco area? The first in the US was P T Barnum in 1856, and by the 1860s, they began to be popular in the European continent.

I don't know the answer to your questions, but you might be able to find aquariums listed in the San Francisco city directory for 1880. Check at the Sutro Library on Winston Drive, behind Stonestown Mall, San Francisco, 415-731-4477, although some directories are available at other libraries as well.
