What is Menu and Chapters in VCD/SVCD

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi,

Pardon my ignorance. I have been reading in other forum(s) (or fora) about creating chapters and menus in VCD/SVCD. Can someone explain what they are and what purposes they serve in the VCD/SVCD?

Thanks.

They allow you to easily skip to different parts of your VCD/SVCD. For example, I have a SVCD I made from an old laserdisc of the Beatles live in Tokyo in 1966. They performed, I think, 11 songs at the show. I set a chapter at the start of each song using I-Author, so if I want to get to song #5, I can go directly to that part of the video instead of having to FF or guess the correct time index to jump to. Menus let you choose chapters to go to, but I have never made a menu as I personally consider them to be superfluous. If you can do chapter skips, you don't really need a menu, but some people like them and use them. To use my previous example, I could creat a menu that lists the names of all the songs the Beatles performed, so that from the menu I could go directly to song #4 or whatever.
