Thursday August 16 9:43 PM ETJapan Government May Be Infected by Code Red II TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese government said on Friday its computers may have been infected by the Code Red II worm which has been eating into servers worldwide.
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said the suspected Code Red virus forced it to temporarily shut down one of its servers -- possibly the worm's first invasion in Japan's government computer network.
``One of our servers may have been infected by the Code Red II worm and we are currently investigating it,'' a ministry official said. ``We closed down that server so other servers should be safe.''
Earlier in the month, Japan's National Police Agency said that about 200 Internet sites across the country may have been hit and warned police to be on alert for the virus.
The Code Red II worm, which strikes servers using certain Microsoft software and operating systems, is a second and more pernicious version of the Code Red worm that struck more than 300,000 computers in July.
