Lens Hood Compatability

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi!

Does anybody know if the #12504 lens hood (designed for 35 f/1.4) can also work on a 50mm f/2.0 and a 90 f/2.8. The reason being is I only have that model and would like to use it on my three lenes: 35mm Summilux, 50mm Summicron and 90mm Tele-Elmarit. I read at Stephen Gandy's Cameraquest site that some models of lens hoods can be compatible with all of these focal lengths. Would anybody know which model number of lens hood would be compatible with all three focal lengths. So you would only have to carry around one. Thank you for your expertise.

Yes, the 12504 will fit onto the various 50mm Summicron models. This hood is, however, a little more open in front to accomodate the large 35mm Summilux front element. The hood(s) designed for the 50's have a little bit narrower angle of acceptance, affording better flare protection. Not a major difference.

When it comes to the 90 Elmarit, the 12504 is way too short for proper flare protection, although it will fit--at least it fits my old Elmarit. It probably fits any lens that takes 39mm filters. You could use it, but it's not ideal.

I think you should probably use the 12504 on your 50, but invest in the proper--much deeper--hood for the 90.

According to my HOVE Leica accessory guide, the 12504 fits the 35/1.4 (from serial#2166701 on)and the 35/2. If it fits a 35/2 it should also fit the 50/2 and the 90/2.8 (except the current E46 version which has its own hood built-in) and even the earlier 135mm lenses. However it would certainly not provide as much shading on the 90 or 135 as the 12575 which was designed for those lenses, and which is much deeper than the 12504 or 12585.
