2001 Possum Trot

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

I sent Dick Neuberger a note about the 2001 Possum Trot, wondering if there's any chance it could be moved to avoid the clash with the US Night Champs dates. Not that I have any reason to believe it might be moved, but I figure it can't hurt to ask, since otherwise you can foresee near certain devastation to the potential start field of possums and even swampfoxes.

I remember some years ago being faced with the desire to do a 12-hour rogaine in Mamouth Cave NP in Kentucky, and also to do the Billygoat, which was scheduled for Townsend SF, NW of Boston. I had to make a choice as they were both on the same weekend. And the correct choice clearly was -- do them both.

The only possibility was a 6 am flight Sunday morning from Cincinnati to Boston. We finished the rogaine about 9 pm, off to the motel for about 3 hours sleep, off at 1 am (we were on the losing side of a one- hour time zone change) for the drive to Cincinnati (with a choice of religious stations on the radio to keep us awake), eventually arriving at Townsend about an hour before the start. Pre-race preparation consisted of checking in and then a nap. My memory of the race is a bit fuzzy....

I would think the idea of the night O' champs and the PT, with a red- eye flight in between, would be virtually irrestible!

I think that last word was supposed to be irresistible...

Find a flight and let's do it.

P.S. Peter you've used up your 3 posts for the year.

The ultimate would be to run the Kansas Short Champs on December 1, catch a flight to California and run the night champs, then the red- eye back to KC for the 'Trot.

I'm sure we could arrange to give you an early start time for the KS Champs. Dick would probably even hold the 'Trot start until 9:30 or so.

GO FOR IT!

Just when I was toying with the idea of doing the relay. I can't do California two weeks in a row.

Clearly Snorkel is not dot com material. Or perhaps he just realizes that these days Californians are apt to view anyone from east of the Sierras with suspicion. What if they were Texans? Texans are not exactly the favored sort in the Great Left State these days. In that latter case, visits on consecutive weekends could be considered downright risky.

The Captain (minus Tenille) sent me back a message today saying he hadn't realized there was a date conflict and that probably the Trot date wouldn't be changed.

Not a surprise, but still, too bad! I reckon that means I will be missing out on this year's showing of Spinal Tap.

Well, hang on. Dick Neuberger is an airline pilot. Maybe he can pull some strings and call in some favors and help us arrange some special air transportation so as to be able to hit all three races.

-- J-J (jjcote@juno.com), August 15, 2001.

It had already crossed my mind that maybe Dick could pilot the special flight himself. But probably not. I am abandoning plans for do-it-yourself accupucture this year, and am instead looking hopefully ahead to a grand osage orange blood-letting in 2002!

Uhhh, if Swampfox there, or anyone else for that matter is entertaining any thoughts at all of success in the 2001 Trot, better just forget about it right now! The way Snorkel is shaping up, it's gonna be lights out for all would-be challengers! Looks like SLOC's gonna take out their first Trot. Lick it up baby, lick... it... up!!!
