Engravings

I am contemplating personalizing a M6TTL with engravings on the top plate. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions concerning same, especially whom you would recommend do the work. Resale value considerations are notwithstanding. Thank you for your thoughts!

Ooops, maybe I should enter this under Did you ever feel really stupid? I just realized that my post is unfortunatly timed and may be deemed to be associated with an earlier post that is rather inflamatory. My apologies if that is the impression I gave.

Brooks,

I hope in recent weeks we have not created an atmosphere of discourse at the Leica forum that makes people feel diffident about posting...

You have a perfectly straightforward question, for which i have no specific answers. People used to engrave their cameras back in the 50s and 60s with name, phone number etc. But artistic engraving? Haven't seen those except in very old, factory made, cameras. Jewellers do engraving, though its hard to find custom jewellers these days of the sort that used to. People engrave silver, belt buckles and the like. And quite a few people have rifles engraved.

Perhaps the best bet is the yellow pages-find someone through it- visit them and ask to see sample. Look under engraving arts.

Here is one resource in North America. There are doubtless many others.

Oops Brooks, my non-response was just my feeble attempt to be funny, and it carried no malicious intent. If anyone should feel stupid, it would be me! My sincere apologies for any misunderstanding caused.

At the Art Institute here in Chicago they have some pieces in the armory hall by a man who engraves guns--covers just about every square inch of metal with something, gold inlays, the whole nine meters. I think his work sells for something in the $15,000 neighborhood--or did several years ago when I saw an article about him. There are a number of people doing this kind of work, apparently--try "engraved firearms" in a search engine and you'll find a bunch of them.

Actually, Brooks (ahem, no lame jokes this time!), it may not be a good idea to have your M6TTL engraved, as the vibration set up by the engraving machine might upset the camera's electronics and the sensitive rangefinding mechanism. See this article here (scroll down to the second-last paragraph): http://www.yashica- guy.com/document/buyer.html.
