Pond leaking around spillway pipe

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My pond started leaking around the outside of the spillway pipe. The pond is about 60' across the top and 8' deep with a 10" diameter pvc pipe going thru the front of the pond(about 25'). I noticed the ground was very wet around the pipe on the outside of the pond. The pipe is buried about 3' down from the top of the pond bank. Does anyone know a quick fix for this or am I doomed to dig. Will bentonite work for this problem? Thank you. P.S This is my first time posting on this forum, but have been lurking for awhile and enjoy it tremendously.

A warm welcome Don, we can be grumpy sometimes, but we don't bite!!!

Has your area had/having lots of rain this summer? I suspect, if you have been having lots of rain, that the ground around your spillway is totally saturated and starting to give way, bentonite will not work at this point. Get the advice of a good local pond man/woman on what to do NOW, before your whole dam wall (no pun intended :-)) gives way and you lose your pond.

The over-flow pipe should have a anti-seep collar,do you know if it has one???It's hard to seal an overflow without one even in clay as around here,my pond has a 12"overflow and the anti-seep collar is about 30" square with an "O" ring seal type thing where the pipe goes through.............

My good neighbors to the west, thanks for your responses and the warm welcome. Its been very dry here in my neck woods, but I do keep the pond full via a well. I don't have an anti-seep collar, but I was given some advice on how to make one out of rubber which slides over the pipe a lays up against the dam wall. I'm going to try it, I'll know soon enough whether i have to tear up my darn dam wall to install an a/s collar. Thanks again, Don
