I work with one! She told me once that her Dad had shouted long and hard for the sacking of Peter Reid after they'd finished 9th in the top division. In retrospect that's probably not the best decision they ever made!!

err with all due respect??????? i can say that Man city are not the same as you lot. They have always stuck by their team and can remember their past where as(some) you cannot.A lot of Newcastle fans( no names or pack drill) are keegan men only.Others seem to think that you always got 50000.I do expect a 'we have bigger crowds than you 'backlash but this is NOT the subject.Man city fans are widely respected in football where as Newcastle AND sunderland fans are considered bandwaggon jumpers.

Soops - Man City may have some of the most "widely respected fans", but in my experience, they also have some of the most neanderthal ones as well. Until recently, I worked in ManUreland and met quite a lot. Like every other club, their genuine fans are great ambassadors for their club. But from my experience at last season's match at Maine Road, they also have many still entrencehd in the late 60s and 70s. Total thugs.

er, didn't Man City used to get about 4000 for the Full Members Cup and as recently as Dec 98 got a crowd of about 2000 for a Cup game. Of course Sunderland and Man City hoolies are best mates (fact).

Man City, like most clubs, have a hard core of loyal, devoted fans. It is a bigger hard core than exists at a lot of clubs. They also have a considerable number of fickle bar stewards, just like any other club. I wonder, for example, when was the last time the club got anywhere near filling Maine Road for a Cup tie of any description where you couldn't get in with your season ticket? 36,000, or even 24,000 for a Worthless Cup match is beyond their imaginings.

The reason why people think Man City fans are exceptionally loyal is because they make assumptions that they must be somehow special if they live in Manchester and don't take the easy option of supporting our beloved league champions.

From my experience, having been to Maine Road on a number of occasions, I can endorse the comments about the unpleasant atmosphere generated by some of their less civilised "supporters".

Well Soops I can see you would have an affinity for Man City as they have played in the same number of divisions as Sunderland has, an achievement Newcastle has failed to emulate.

Wasn't the point of this thread more to do with our ex manager than about fans?

Superkev,

To be perfectly honest anyone who seriously criticises the fans of either Newcastle OR Sunderland (ie. other than tongue-in- cheek) doesn't know what they are talking about.

Unlike the fans of most clubs - including Man City - who's teams have at least won something within the living memory of the majority of their supporters, our favourite Clubs have been spectacular failures. Quite frankly, they don't deserve the wonderful support they both get.

I've mentioned this before on here, but I once read an article called "the miracle of economic stagnation in Argentina". The article describes the super-abundance of natural resources, temperate climate, and excellent education system that country possesses, and how it has needed a miracle for them to fail utterly to become an economic powerhouse in the world. I've always felt that scenario provides a perfect analogy for NUFC & SAFC.

Dave, I'm chuffed for Kev, but in a weird way like. Its kind of like your former wife with another bloke, but you still love her - situation.

Part of Keegan's success with us was the whole football boom and SKY lapping up our games etc. And the fact that we had money. It'll be a different game entirely pulling off Special K stunts at Man City. I hate Man City and their brain dead fans so I'm afraid I hope he f..ks it up spectacularly.

He'll bottle it and pull the pin next week!

I've got good mates who're Man City fans....not thugs.....they like us deserve something special after all the crap they've had from their neighbours (try imagining it was sunderland instead of manure)....

I hope he pulls it off for them....well at least enough to get them into the premiership and make them respectable....

Every club has undesirablr fans.I can,if you like, point out instances where your lot have been braindead.Part of football as far as i am concerned is realism and that is what i stated.Football wise i think they will be back in the premier next year.
