Checking the specs at: http://www.camera.canon.com.my/camera_lenses/camera/index.htm

It looks like the 88 is about the same thing as the previous 500 but with an Asian marketing name. The 500N was a step up from that and offered E-TTL flash metering. The 300 is now filling this slot for Canon with more features and the older 500 model is being offered with the 88 model name. There may actually be differences between the 500 and the 88, but I didn't detect them from my quick look.

The EOS 30 is the better camera for novices because it has better controls. If that's too expensive, get the 300. If that's still out of range, get the 500.

They will all take different lenses, both zoom and prime. There are well over a hundred different lenses made for EOS cameras.

Even as a beginner you should make sure you select a body that has at least:

- Manual mode so you can begin to develop in the fine art and science of Exposure, and

- Depth of Field preview - so you can see the effect of fstop on what is and isn't rendered sharply.

Both the Rebel 2000 (EOS 300) and Elan 7/7E (EOS 30/33) have both these features. (not sure about the 500). I saw something on EOS magazine that said the 300N did not provide Depth of Field Preview. Was it a typo? Try before you buy.

Personally I use the Canon Elan 7E (EOS 33)and would recommend spending a little extra for it. Good luck!

Quick retraction; Mea culpa: did not notice the extra zero :o

So it is the 3000N that does not support DOF preview and I would not recommend it if you plan to learn and develop in your photographic skill.

Bottom line is still the same: make sure the body you select has manual settings and depth of field preview.

I bought an EOS 500N 3 years ago as a novice and there has never been anything i cant do with the camera, the controls are easy and of course any cannon will become your best friend.
