Caulking

Caulking is a common task that comes up when prepping for paint or weather sealing around the house. While manufacturer claims about product life are dubious, a caulk job is only as good as the application. For caulk to perform properly it must be applied so that it adheres only to the two sides of the gap being filled. If the gap is entirely filled with caulk it will adhere to the two sides AND the bottom resulting in premature failure.

When possible, first fill the gap with backer rod before caulking. The caulk will not adhere to the backer rod but will adhere to the two sides of the gap. Backer rod comes in various diameters and is available at the usual places.

Put Old Bedding to a Good Use If you have old bedding, such as blankets or sheets, or carpets, rugs, etc., don't throw them out. Call your local humane society or vet to see if they could use them to keep animals warm. (PS..they could use extra food, too!)
