Source (aftermarket) for things like:

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Multifueled stove, Gravely type mowers with attachment, fencing, building materials, etc., etc. that can be used on a small 'homestead'. So many Americans buy big ticket items and only use them a couple of times. Then they occupy a corner of the garage. You can drive down any street and a majority will have their cars parked outside. Why, the garage is full of unused equiptment. Probably have answered my own question. No general organized aftermarket, but a lot of garage sales.

Perhaps not exactly what you're talking about, but when my husband was in the market for a sawmill, we found an online site called "The Sawmill Exchange." There were used sawmills listed from $750 homebuilt ones through $20,000 and higher (didn't look at those). Have also found a site for people to buy and sell straw and hay bales (when we were thinking of building a straw bale house) Oh, another place to look is online classifieds--looking for electric generators and travel trailers I looked up the Thrifty Nickel online and found that you can specify either a city or a whole region to search. Also I read, on this forum I think, that a good idea is to advertise in the "wanted" section of the local classifieds, since people may have things in their attic, garage, barn, etc, that they hadn't even thought of trying to sell, or forgotten they had.

Thanks Elizabeth Don't plan on a sawmill, but probably will need several [rectangular] bayles of hay for errosion control after the grading and before the vegation is established. Will also need a electrical generator. Think I have heard references to the 'Thrifty Nicklel'. Have not heard about the 'online classified'. Assume both of theses sights can be located with a simple search. The 'wanted' idea seems like it might be feasable. Some newspapers think their space is more valuable than the cost of a bran new item for which you are looking.

We put an ad in the Little Nickel for a riding mower or garden tractor, doesn't have to be running, will pay up to $500. We got several calls. Among them were a BCS with a sickle bar mower for $200, and a Gravely with a mower deck for $250. Both were running.

Thanks Laura, The key word on bargain seems to be 'Nickel'. An earlier post referenced Thrifty Nickel. Heard some good comments about the Gravely.
