where to find ohiobluetip/strike anywhere matches?!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

we love ohio blue tips....maybe it is just strike anywheres. We are only able to find strike on box matches. can't you get the others anymore? we can't find them in any local stores. is there a web site for ohiobluetips that i can't find (not too good searching the net) to ask, or is this fruitless. It is so inconvenient to have to have that box for everything, and it wears out, etc. we used to like striking them on zippers, backs of our teeth, rocks, walls, with finger nails, and see those little black floaters. the convenience of carrying a couple in the flannel shirt pocket. we like wood and fire, not lighters. hey, we even turn off the pilot on the stove to be able to use a match! can anyone give insight?

I think my local grocery store still has them. Maybe it's a different brand but I know it's a huge box of wooden matches. If you're desperate, I'll check for you. If it's what you want I can try to send you a box (now wondering about mailing flammables, though). Let me know.

Diamond brand is who makes Ohio Blue tip. Ask them where you can find them local. info@diamondbrands.com

After I responded earlier I got curious myself and did a little research. Here's more than you ever wanted to know about Ohio Blue Tip Matches. They were manufactured in Wadsworth, Ohio and are the reason the annual summer festival there is The Blue Tip Festival. Hunt Foods bought them a few years back and they are no longer in Ohio (not unlike Toledo Scales no longer being in Toledo, but I digress). Ohio Blue Tip Matches are now manufactured by Universal Match Company in the thriving metropolis of Kenner, LA. Their address is just that, Universal Match Corp., Kenner, La 70062-7096. I hope this helps.

Bobco, we had the same experience, and I think they were Diamond matches. So, we had to waste probably half of them, and they really weren'ts strike anywhere. Gary and Dave, that is the info I needed! My husband thought they were once part of the Diamond match company too. I will follow up on this, because Ohio Blue Tips are one of those silly little luxuries and pleasures in life that we hate to give up. Thanks so much!

I used to love Ohio Blue tip matches until they ignited in my shirt pocket a couple of times. The first time it happened, I thought it was a strange fluke and I continued to carry them for my pipe smoking. After the second time they spontaneously ignited a year or so later, I quit carrying them. They not only burned holes in my shirts, but I received burns to my chest.

I suppose if you only carried them in a closed metal tube and stored them in a metal container, it would be okay. I doubt any parcel carrier would let you mail them if they knew what it was, and I would hate to see someone mail them sureptitiously. Most carriers fly their parcels and you could end up killing people just like in the movie "Castaway" with Tom Hanks.

Marcee, I bought my 'strike anywhere' at the grocery store. The only thing walmart had was 'strike on box'. Both Diamond brand. Bob, which walmart did you find strike anywhere? C'ville or B'ville or Indy?

Dont know what happened when I just posted above. Anyway, eleven years ago when I moved here to NW Arkansas, I couldnt find Diamond/BlueTip matches except as safety version. Did however find FireChief brand in local small town store. They worked fine. Then this year that store no longer carried them, but had Diamond strike anywhere matches. They arent as good as FireChief or old Diamond/BlueTip strike anywhere matches, but are ok if kept very dry and used within a few months. Have you thought of buying disposable cigarette lighter?

I keep this TYPE of match you're talking about around for camping & lighting our gas old oven/stove - I usually buy them at any of the "Dollar" type stores. Not sure if they're the "Ohio Blue" specifically, though. Seems like it's a mostly red box w/ blue & white on it. . . Diamond does ring a bell, but I could be mistaken. Anyway, they're not always the same brand from store to store & some work better than others. Just FYI!
