Today, August 8, the Catholic Church honors, in a special way, the following friends of God, saints whose souls are now in heaven:

St. Dominic (de Guzman), founder of the Order of Friars Preachers (O.P.) or "Dominicans"
St. Gedeon
St. Hormisdas
St. Joan of Aza
St. John Felton
St. Mary MacKillop (of Australia)
St. Mummolus
St. Myron the Wonder Worker

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

The following novena prayer was sent to me by some beautiful contemplative Dominican Nuns who practice a "perpetual rosary" devotion:
O glorious St. Dominic, filled with zeal for the salvation of souls, you preached the gospel message unceasingly and founded the Order of Friars Preachers to tend to the defense of the true faith and the conversions of sinners ... Pray to God for us, that he may grant us grace whereby we may love our brothers and sisters sincerely and support them with prayers and good works, so that they may pursue holiness and eternal salvation.
Pray for us, O blessed Father Dominic,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Grant, we beseech you, o Lord, that we who are pressed down by the weight of our sins may be lifted up through the patronage of blessed Dominic, your confessor. We ask you this through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

[The message at the top of this thread is from August 8, 2001. It was my very first "today's saints" thread. When I first started, I used only one source of information. Now I use others too, so I have more saints' names. And when I first started, I sometimes gave almost no information about most of the saints. That too has changed. Today and on some other days in August, I'll take advantage of this new opportunity to improve my lists of saints.]

John,

Thanks! I spelled deeds, deads. Shame on me! One day I will become a good speller like Glenn. :-)

Nice to read your posts again.

John,

Thank you for the dedication you put into providing these lists of saints.

August 8th was the day my beautiful little girl was born. We always refer to her as the little wonder, because we wonder where she gets her theatrical talent from. She loves to entertain.....singing, dancing, and acting.

Therefore, I choose St. Myron the Wonder Worker as her saint. Three reasons: The word "Wonder" that follows St. Myron and the fact that we call her the little wonder, second, I hope that she is as charitable and giving as St. Myron, and to have the ability to recognize the need to give as St. Myron did, and third....the date of course!

Your hardwork and dedication to the Saints is to be rewarded. It is because you do this, that I will be teaching my daughter about this Saint, that I otherwise would not have known about.

May you be richly blessed John,

-- Kathy (sorry@nomail.com), August 19, 2002.

A belated "happy birthday" to your daughter, Kathy!
And thanks so much for telling me what you did. It feels so nice to know that my little effort has been somehow helpful. I hope that your daughter grows up to be just as kind and faith-filled as you are.

Hi John,

We have been so busy that we haven't had her party yet....but thank you for the "belated happy b-day".

And, your welcome. I just wanted you to know that your work is not in vain.

Keep up the good work my friend.

God bless you,

-- Kathy (sorry@nomail.com), August 19, 2002.

Hi John,

I just realized that this is the first thread you started with the Saints. I must have missed were you stated this in the above post.

Looks like things have come full circle, your effort and hard work has paid off. Looks like I am not the only one enjoying "Todays Saints".

As Gail would say "What a kawinkadink!"

God Bless you John,

-- Kathy (sorry@nomail.com), August 26, 2002.

Thanks, Kathy. I have learned so much! This has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

John,

Is blessed Peter Favre of Villaret[First Jesuit priest] feastday celebrated on the eighth of August?

Thanks,

-- David (David@excite.com), August 08, 2003.

JFG,

I've always appreciated the effort you've put in to your "Saints of the Day" threads and am sorry to see one get hijacked by the one- noters. Hopefully, their "posts" can be removed (along with this post).

"Traditionalists have taken the time to research things thoroughly"

Hahahahaha!!! That's funny.

-----------------

BTW, John, I also want to thank you for all the time he spent working on the Saints of the Day threads. I hope that you've got your work stored on your own disk. I'd hate to see the Greenspun site go down one day and lose all your work!

God bless,

Mateo

Late in 2003 and early in 2004, Pope John Paul II beatified sixteen servants of God. The following one was assigned this calendar day for yearly commemoration.

Bl. Bonifacia Rodríguez Castro of Salamanca (Spanish, cord-maker, founded Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Saint Joseph, died at age 68 in 1905 [beatified 2003])

Sorry, David and Mateo. I must have overlooked your messages last year. Thanks for what you said, Mateo. I do have all the information saved on disk and CD. David, you will find Bl. Peter Faber/Favre on the August 11 thread. Information souces do not agree on his day of commemoration.
