How to make CD-RW VCDs that will play in an Alpine DVA 5200 or 5205greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread
I have an alpine DVA 5205 and was wondering how to make a VCD that will play in that thing. I was told by Alpine that the player will play VCDs only if there is a "table of contents" ring burned into the disc. I am using CD-RW discs since the DVA 5205 has a sinle laser pickup. If anybody knows how to do this I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thanks.

Well, the table of contents stuff is nonsense. I'm not sure what they mean by that, unless they were trying to tell you that your VCD needs to be made in the standard way with all the standard subdirectories, etc. and not just a MPG file burned onto a CD-RW in data mode. Go to the following sites to see how to make VCDs: www.vcdhelp.com www.digital-digest.com www.doom9.net members.home.net/richa www.labdv.com Once you have a VCD compliant MPEG-1 file, you can use a copy of Nero (www.ahead.de) to make the VCD if you like. Nero is CD burning software. You can get the demo version if you like and make a VCD with it. I can't find out anything about your player. I wish you a lot of luck as I have a bad feeling nothing you do will work on it. You should be aware that some players won't support CD-RW at all, but CD-RW has the best chance of working on single laser DVD players.

The deck in the AL DVA-5205 is not capable of reading either CDRs or CDRWs.
The deck uses a proprietry interface (not ATAPI), and does in fact require a 'correct' disc format.
The laser power is also insufficient to deal with the reduced reflectivity index of non pressed discs.
There are other 'safeguards' included in the firmware (no I can't tell you) ;-) to specifically prevent any disc playing except an original pressing. This also applies to copied or 'home made' DVD R of all descriptions (but for dsifferent reasons).
