Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs). They were typically psychoanalytic in their approach up to the 1950s, but since the introduction of psychpharmaceuticals tend to be strongly oriented toward physiological or chemical therapies. Clinical psychologists, by contrast, have Ph.D.s in psychology. They cannot prescribe pharmaceuticals, and tend toward talk- or behavioral-therapies.
