Supply preaching

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Christian Church : One Thread

I am involved in supply preaching (for the past 5-6 years). I live in middle Tennessee and have preached in most of Tennessee, middle and eastern Kentucky and northern Alabama. I am seeking additional opportunities. I will consider all needs (size or ability to pay are no factor). I consider myself conservative regarding the Word. I have made three preaching trips to India and can speak on that during the Bible study time (if desired) or I can teach during that time. If you have a need, let me know. Don't hesitate due to finances or distance. If possible, I'll help.

I got a response to my listing but it seemed to have no connection to supply preaching at all. Help!

It didn't!! It was just a pest we have to swat from time to time.

Is/was this the right place to post a notice re supply preaching availability??? If not, please offer some suggestions (besides bible colleges).

Don't take it personally, Phil.

I've been on the Supply list (Injured Reserve - as I call it) for some 6 years in Florida......and never received a single call (except from some of my good friends, whom I greatly appreciate).

Just a guess on my part, but it would appear that a lot of churches would rather do without a preacher, unless they can get a "Name" personality to fill their gap. This is such a shame because it keeps flocks from being fed on Sundays and helps weaken & discourage good men from entering the ministry.

Well, the last Church I was with in Ohio, I trained up 5 good men to preach and were quite capable of supply. More than that, They were on a rotation, each taking turns. The Church I am headed to also has several men preaching besides the Evangelist.

As you know Mark, since you were one of them, Danny Gabbard trained up several men to preach in his last ministry, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he's doing it now. I do not believe this is what is going on in most Churches, but at least in some, the need is simply not there.

At least in some since, the lack of demand for "supply preachers" may be a good sign. However, it doesn't do much for you guys :o(

Never heard the term "supply preacher" before. Is that anything like Supply-side Economics? ;)

Guess there are no needs, at least none that you folks know about. I was obviously wrong or getting bad information regarding the need for additional preachers. I am glad that there is no further need for those of us who have full time "secular" jobs, are not "big name" preachers and yet seek to serve the Body as needed.

Phil

Supply preaching to Christians is comfortable. I see to many comfortable preachers now. Consider going where the need is. If you are located in Tn. there must be hundreds of denominational groups near you. Many of them are looking for someone to preach. It seems that once you preach for them others soon begin to call you. You may live in the center of a mission field. Tell them up front where you stand and many still want to hear what you have to say. It sure beats preaching to the choir.

I'll second what Faris said. Here in SW PA I am available to supply preach as needed ... I have a Sunday coming up in November where a nearby Pres. preacher asked me to fill in for him while he is out of town. He knows what I will be preaching, and where I stand. Here in PA I have preached in a number of pulpits ... not all of which are Christian Church/Church of Christ. Provided I can preach the Gospel, I'll go.

Now ... I do not use the chance to preach as a "bully pulpit" to slam folks with the immersion issue ... or any other issue for that matter. I preach the same sermon I would preach if asked to fill one of "our" pulpits. And yes, I have been asked to come back and fill their pulpits again.
