I have received your e-mail concerning J. Haller, and unfortunately I have almost no information for you. The name J. Haller does not appear in any of our standard reference books on American artists. Radtke, Lauckner and Company, a New York firm, hired many artists, and turned out hundreds of prints in the late 19th century. They specialized in landscapes and sentimental subjects, and J. Haller is one artist associated with them.

As to value, I have looked in the most recent issues of Gordon's Print Price Annual and Lawrence's Dealer Print Prices, and there are no entries for J. Haller or Radtke, Lauckner and Company. That does not mean the prints have no value - they just have not sold recently.

I am sorry I was not able to provide you with more information. Good luck with your research.

From what I have found, E L Fields, an English or Irish artist who lived around the turn of the century did most of the scenes, as well as a small remarque on these prints. J Haller also signed these in pencil. I have seen several of his lithographs, all done by Radke & Lauckner Company in NYC from about 1890 to 1895. Mine was lithogrphed in 1893 and I believe the lithograph company went out of business before the turn of the century.

J. Haller's etchings were distributed by Radthe Lauchner & Co., NY. My Haller etching was distributed in 1893. If you input Radthe Lauchner as your search engine on Google, you will see GoAntiques where they are offering for sale a Haller etching with the same Radthe Lauchner as the distributor.

I have emailed the Antique company and asked for any information concerning Lauchner and Haller.

i also have a work of his dated 1890 and signed j. haller in pencil.the work reminds me of a japanese wood block style print. i found this print behind an old picture of the last supper, they were using it for backing and the frame. mine came out of an attic of an old farm house, it had been there for quite some time. if anyone finds anything out please let me know.

Today (October 18, 2003) we purchased a print(?) or lithograph(?) signed in pencil by J. Haller in the lower right corner. In the left corner is "EL FIELD". It is of a man in a boat fishing with buildings behind him on the land. The artwork appears to be in its original frame with original glass. Purchased a J Haller lithograph(?) over 10 years ago in New Hamshire from a antique shop. Still have the original frame and glass but we placed a different picture in it and had Haller's print reframed. The print is of a farmhouse and other buildings surrounded by high grass or marshland. There is water in front before the farm with a wooden bridge and dirt road leading to the farm. In the backround are what appear to be sails, and therefore it appears that the water is also surrounding 3 sides of the farm (the farm maybe on a peninsula by a bay. The print is signed in pencil in the lower right and in the lower left is a miniature drawing of the same farm scene. On the top left of the print is published by Radthe Lauchner.......

I also purchased a J. Haller it is signed and has the small picture below the print? lithograph? copyright Radthe,Lauckner&Co. 1892. Several people believe it to be a local scene from Piqua, Ohio. I am also, very curious about this print. It is in a very old oak frame with wood backing. The scene is of a horse and single axle with a hoop over the bed of the wagon they are beginning to cross a bridge going into town the Catholic Church steeple can be seen across the river. I have two lithos I inherited, one marked Radtke Lauckner, the other signed by the artist J. Haller ( I thought it was J Hallu from the penciled signiture.) The one with the publisher name is 10" by 20" and shows two cottages beside a small river, the one in the background has smoke comming from the chimmney. A lovely stone bridge crosses the river (a similar detail of the bridge is shown in the print margin. In the backgound is a church. The second 4" by 18" is a view of a bay with two sailboats in the background, a wharf and a steepled bulding in the center. Although unsigned it could be by Haller. At least it has the Radtke Lauckner 1890 mark. These look like steel engravings. I guess from the above Haller is an unknown artist. Still it would be interesting to learn more. If they have even modest value it would pay to clean them because the subjects are quite interesting.

Today I purchased 3 lithographs (I was told) that appear to match the descriptions detailed in this series of messages. One of them has the name E. L. Field in the lower left corner. It is written in a grassy area of the picture and is printed in an outline style. Each of these pictures has a name. The one with the signature is "Glimpse of River." The other two are "River Bend" and "Before Sunset." I looked for information on Field and E-Bay came up so I checked to see what they had. There are four (I think) photos of lithographs by him and photos of 2 of his signatures and the copyright info. The info claims he was a New York artist - copyright date of 1891 - and dates his work from 1856 to 1914. I tried to go back to the e-bay site for more information but now I can't find it. Anyway, thought you all might find this interesting. Incidentally, all three are framed in old oak frames painted black, with bubbled glass, measuring 18"x8 1/2".

Another note: I was looking for more on E. L. Field and came across a reference to www.askart.com site. J. Haller is Alfred J. Haller. I tried that full name and still didn't get much, but at least it gave a first name. It also states that he is mentioned in a couple books - "Davenport's Art Reference," 2001, Ray Davenport, and The Artist's Bluebook, which is listed as not for sale. Maybe this will help. Good luck.

Sorry for dragging this out, but also found out that E.L. Field is Edward Loyal Field - born 1856 in Galesburg, Illinois, died 1914 in N.Y. - Was a painter, illustrator, etcher - mostly landscapes, rivers, farms. Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus, Ohio has some of his works. He studied at Academie Julian, Paris and Carolus-Duran. The Ask Art web site lists 15 books that he is mentioned in. I'm not a member of that site so couldn't find out much more. -- I think I'm finished now.

I have had my lithograph picture quite a while. It is in the dark brown original frame that has beautiful carvings. The matting is gold, and seems in good condition. It is a picture of a river, with trees and rocks in the foreground and appears to be the autumn. The signature is not clear but on the top left is says Copyrighted by Radthe Lauckner 1893. I have been for a while trying to figure out the "mystery" of these pictures, also the price. Now here is a little interesting note - I live in Hawaii so the pictures made it across the Pacific Ocean. Let me know if you find something out. Thanks.

The picture is of a pond with a boat, house, barns and outbuilding and mountains in the distance. I am curious if this is similar to others you have described. It was my grandparents.

In my mom's attic I found what sounds like the same litho as Marge & Bill (earlier posting) have, but mine isn't signed by J. Haller but by Field both in print on the litho and in pencil in the lower right margin. It's in the original frame & mat but needs attention. Were these things the contemporary mass- production art made available for the masses? Thanks.

We also have a Radth & Lauchner print dated 1891, but it is not signed by J. Haller - it is signed in pencil in the lower right corner by what appears to be "JW Bohde" or perhaps "JW Bahde". The scene depicts a land/waterscape with a pond or river in the right foreground and a land mass in the right background with a dwelling. A man in a boat is fishing in the water. In the left foreground is a closer land mass with a dwelling and a man walking down a path to the water with a fishing pole over his shoulder. At the bottom of the print, not part of the depiction, is a very faint drawing of a fishing pole n ink, about 1&1/4 " long, oriented horizontally.

I came upon this thread while researching a name I found on an etching I literally found in the garbage. I actually have two images in the same frame, one behind the other. They were not matted, not kept in the best of conditions, There is some pretty bad discoloration. They are the same size. The one on top is 7 5/8" high x 20 1/2" long. It looks to have been trimmed down & some one used scotch tape in the upper right corner (!). It is a coastal scene with two long slim boats in the foreground. one with a mast & 2 figures, one with one figure. The scene also includes several trees on the right as well as a boat with square sails (and 3 smaller in the distance). to the left are several buildings including a church and a windmill. To the far left there is a stone wall. There is no signature, but on the back in pencil it says "Coast of France".

The second etching is much more "refined" looking. Trimmed to the same size as the one above, it does still include a signature ( EL Field) as well as a tiny etched "sketch" in the lower right. On the lower left is the etched signature EL Field. This is also a coastline. featuring 3 buildingsand around the "bend of the coast is a sail boat. This is a late autumn feeling scene, there are few leaves on the trees. There is substancial discoloration on this print. waterdamage as well as vertical discoloration from an unknown source.

Can anyone tell me what these are? Is there value to them? Thank you for your help. Susan Herbst

I have a print/lithograph copyright Radke Laucker dated 1890 and signed by J Haller. The print is about 24" tall by 8" wide and is of a rough track leading over a small wooden bridge to a farmhouse/cottage with cottages and a church in the distance.

I bought it some twenty years ago in its original(?) frame for 50p (UK pence, about 30 US cents now) in a jumble sale. It's in good condition and looks very much at home in our converted barn!

Just a thought but if anyone would be interested in me setting up a web gallery of our lithographs then let me know.

I have an EL Field copyrighted 1889 by Klackner N.Y as stated in the top left above the top edge of the etching. EL Field is included in the body of the etching on the bottom right corner with a flowing signature E. L. Field below the etched one outside the body of the picture. Small very fine skeched scene of what appears to be the original scene idea outside and below border 1/4 of the way in from left side. The scene is coastal river with low flat banks and higher hills to the left rear of the scene. From the right center is a point of higher land with five groupes of trees building in height as they progress to the center of the scene with a home slightly hidden behind a low bush area on the end of the point which ends 2" right of center. Directly centered in the scene, directly at the house level, is what appears as two masts of a small boat with just a hint of a hull showing at the level of the low bank. Lower and between the boat and house is a bird flying very low over the water. Etching is in origonal oak frame with bubbled glass, secured in the back via cardboard and pin nails to the frame. Sounds as if there were many different coastal scenes produced by Field during this era. This etching has no other signatures on it. Any information is appreciated....

I have been told for you out there who have an E. L. Field etching, that Field did the actual etching but when J. Haller signs in pencil, this means that J. Haller inked and pulled the etching off the plate. When E.L. Field did it himself, he signed...ok.. granted J. Haller was a good etcher himself..
