Moving to a place that doesn't have the same kickass restaurants

greenspun.com : LUSENET : digital ink : One Thread

Have you ever moved to a place that didn't have the really kickass restaurants (fast food or otherwise) you loved in your hometown? It happened to me, and it's a tragedy.

Stuff they have in the St. Louis area that they don't have here:

Blueberry Hill in U City Loop. Damn, that place rocks. I'm so pissed at myself for not taking Eric there when I had the chance.

Cicero's, also in U City.

Jack in the Box

Lotta Watta Creek. Is this just a local thing? I can't find anyone else anywhere who's ever heard of it.

The McDonald's Riverboat. Hilarious. I don't think it's there anymore, though.

Pizza World. Despite the fact that I worked in one for a year, it's still damn good pizza.

Sonic

The Old Spaghetti Factory, on Laclede's Landing

St. Louis Bread Co.

Steak 'n Shake. There isn't one within a 100-mile radius. Closest one? Charlotte, NC. Hmph. Next time I'm back in St. Louis, the minute I step off the plane, my ass is headed for the nearest one.

Last but certainly not least, Ted Drewe's Frozen Custard. I don't know anybody who lived in the area and hadn't had the stuff at least once.

Now, granted, there are a few things here that we didn't have in St. Louis. Well, I can only think of one right now: Cheddar's. I listened to Eric rave about it for like six months, and the day before I moved down here, he told me something along the lines of, "I'M taking you to Cheddar's, and if anybody else takes you first, I'm going to kill them. Or something." But yeah, it rocks.

I could go into a big thing about places I am very, very thankful they have in St. Louis but don't have here, but that's another topic.

You're right Katie...the St. Louis area has tons of cool restaurants. I went to the Bread Co. the other day for lunch. What about California Pizza Kitchen (there's one in the Galleria)...do you have one in Virginia? Or what about Krispy Kreme? Yum. I haven't been to Blueberry Hill yet but I really want to...were you ever to the Fitz's Rootbeer place? It's right across the street from Blueberry Hill...anyway it's great. Have you come back to IL since you've moved away?

MMMM. Ted Drewe's. I think I'm going to have to go get some now.

CA Pizza Kitchen: Never been there. Fitz's Root Beer place: Never been there either. KRISPY KREME! There's like, one around here, and I haven't been yet. I love those things. I remember when the one opened in Fairview Heights... freaking hour wait both inside, and in the drive-thru.

I'll be back there August 17-19... and my ass WILL be at Steak 'n Shake the night I get back, even though my plane gets in at like 11pm.

The Old Spaghetti Factory is good.. have one here.

Jack in the Box is gross, but we have tons of them here.

CA Pizza Kitchen.. well, duh, we have those here.

Of course, I can't move anywhere, because I'd miss San Francisco's Sourdough bread that is so unique you can only get it here. I'd have to have loaves flown in if I moved anywere else. Yummmm

it's all good now

As Katie knows, i'm always all over the country...and ( I'll agree with Greg ) you CAN'T beat San Francico sourdough bread....but there are other things you can buy in parts of the country that you just cant get anywhere else.... NY or NJ style pizza....NJ subs....NY & NJ "hard rolls" Grits in Mississippi... "sweet" tea anywhere in the south.. and ( YUK ) St louis style pizza ( thin as a nacho chip ) Pretzels in PA.....( MUSHROOMS in pa )....Seafood ( if you EAT seafood that is ) in Maine and Louisiana and ( ALL YOU CAN EAT ANYTHING ) in Florida ....the italian restaruants cant be beat anywhere in upstate NY.......Irish pubs in Boston .....the list goes on & on

There's one thing that stands out in my mind: Pizzeria Uno's in Chicago. I'm not sure if they've got restaurants in other parts of the country but I've eaten at a few different ones in the suburbs and NOTHING compares to Uno's on Ohio Street in downtown Chicago. If you're ever there, just trust me on this one.

Yup, they have those around the country -- here and St. Louis that I know of.

I second the Steak'n Shake; they have the best taco salad.

I couldn't live without Uncle Nick's (best gyros in town & open until 4:30 AM), Beef-A-Roo (good roast beef sandwhiches, cheese fries, chili, milkshakes). That's all that I can think of right now.

teehee... reading the names of all these restaurants makes me think of that simpsons episode where the hibberts are arguing where they should go to dinner and they suggest stuff like the spaghetti laboratory and the texas cheesecake depository. restaurants really do have some damn goofy names nowadays... damn the simpsons and their dead on social commentary.

I've never actually moved permanently from one place to another. But in Sheffield, where I live in termtime, there is an *amazing* Italian/Spanish place, K Pasa. I miss it loads when I'm home. And similarly, at home there is a *fantastic* Chinese place, Old Shanghai. I've never yet found a decent Chinese in Sheffield and I hate not having one right there.

when i am in nyc/nj i miss the following oberlin establishments -- java zone (the best hummus ever. so much olive oil and so much paprika and the best pita bread. it's such great stuff!) weia teia (pad thai) the feve (hummus and tater tots and 8000 kinds of grilled cheesers)

when i am in oberlin, i miss these places : ANY mexican restaurant (especially san loco and gonzales and gonzales) because oberlin has no mexican, angelica's kitchen (the best vegan food in the universe), all sorts of fun 24 hour diners, cafe mona lisa, film center cafe (really good grilled mushroom sandwiches and fresh cut fries!), dojo's, and yaffa (two words : carrot. dressing.).

the french fries at silver spurs are really good, too. and what will i do without indian food and quality bagels at my disposal??

Here's the food court for my dream mall: - Steak 'n Shake. I had my first Steak 'n Shake experience in Indianapolis... It was absolutely DIVINE. - The Original Hot Dog Shop. Go to Pittsburgh, near the Pitt campus, and hit the "O." It's pricy, and the staff are a little "Soup-Nazi"- ish, but it's fantastic. (Substitute Nathan's if you wish...) - Primanti Brothers. The one taste of da 'Burgh I've never had. They put the slaw and the fries IN the sandwich. Isn't that nifty? - Hat World. Just because it makes no fucking sense to have a hat store in the food court. - Chick-fil-A. I always get a hankerin' for Chick-fil-A on Sundays-- when they're closed. - Dairy Queen, beyotch! :) - a Japanese place and a Chinese place that are run by the same Korean family. - a place that sells nothin' but collard greens n' chittlins. Right next door to "Haggis R Us." The smells would complement each other nicely...

If I move up north (and I will, God help me), I will sorely miss Waffle House. I drive by their headquarters on my way from home to college... maybe I can strike up a deal with them to send me hash browns every week if I pay them well enough?

I love Bruster's ice cream. They're just now moving into my hometown, so I won't have to miss them anymore.

Ahh..yes.

When I'm at school in Ohio, I miss these fine Wisconsin establishments: Noodles & Co. (the BEST mac n' cheese around..and the best assortment of various noodle dishes, actually..and cheap!), Big Mike's Super Subs (mmm...Skinny Cheese..or number 6..or number 4..), good pizza (like Gino's in Chicago, for example. Ohio pizza is all the same and all very thin and just not great) and Culver's frozen custard (custard and other yummy things)..

When I'm here in Wisconsin, I miss Turkey Torpedoes and potato skins from the local dive in Granville...and the Cheesecake Factory...but that's about it.

I just thought of another thing that they have here, but not in St. Louis/Southern IL: Subway Station. Rowr.

Buuuuuuuuuuuut, in Normal, where ISU is, they have a place called Jimmie John's Sub Shop, which is even better than Subway Station. The only two that I know of are in Normal and Mattoon, where Eastern IL University is.

You know, for being such a small crappy town (Bloomington is right next to it, and pretty big, though), Normal sure has produced some good shit. Steak n Shake started there. Jimmie John's started there. And of course, I started my college career there. Erm, well, sort of.

:)

Oh yes, how could I forget about Culvers?? Custards, butter burgers, crinkled fries, milk shakes.. yum.

-- Anonymous, August 14, 2001

Geo's, Taco Tico, and Taco Casa... all in Oklahoma... but I now have Krispy Kreme, Cheddars, and Boston's Gourmet Pizza... so I guess I didn't fare too bad, huh?

-- Anonymous, August 15, 2001

god, i hate steak and shake. the only thing i can really eat there is french fries, and they have some HEINOUS french fries. also every steak and shake i've ever been to is like.. the local high school's hangout. and it's way too brightly-lit for me to enjoy at 3am.

when i move out of orlando, i will miss the SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST HOSPITAL CAFETERIA !(*#)@*)(#*!)(*)#@(. all vegetarian and vegan food with sandwich bars, pizza bars, a GRILL, and a dinner bar type thing. open very late, very very inexpensive, great great food. and clean ! cause it's a hospital !

-- Anonymous, August 19, 2001

Hold up. Not only do you like hospital food, but you specifically go to the hospital FOR the food? There's something you don't see everyday...

Going back to roxy's comments on steak n' shake, here in Australia a relatively new chain of chicken places, Oporto's, are the local hang outs for high school kids. McDonalds are for teenagers who appearantly are never in school. Nobody actually goes to Pizza Hut; they get it delivered. Kentucky Fried Chicken seems to be the only place where families still go to, which is a blessing because it's the only fast food joint I could eat in thanks to the absence of schizophrenic teenagers, but a shame because it's always crowded in there. Day-umn.

While Stake'n'Shake is good, nothign compares to Silver Diner. I miss that so much. I also miss Starbucks. And Borders. Krispy Kreme... The list could go forever. All they have here are a couple of fast food places and a Golden Corral. When's fall break again?
