Dyer and other press round-up

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

The Mail claims that Leeds only think that Dyer is worth 15 million and that we have been discreetly getting agents around Europe to track any interest abroad - there is none. SuperMac is back down to earth, saying we look OK against a side with pedantic passing like 1860 but need more players to compete in the PL. This a week after his comments that Craig Bellamy was our best buy ever practically and had revolutionised the side. Nice first X1 from Bob Moncur including Frank Clark and Tony Green, with Joe Harvey as his top manager. Robbie Elliott delighted to be back in Europe. Bobby says that he will Lolo in Rob's testimonial if he gets 10% of the gate. Alan Oliver says that a lot of people at NUFC (players and staff) are obsessed with Celtic and regularly go to watch a game. Aaron once played against Laurent Robert in a friendly against France but as Lolo was a sub, replacing Lizarazu, he cann't really remember him.

Oh, and your bairns can win a ticket to Alan Shearer's soccer day at Maiden Castle or else a ST at the SoL.

Oh, yeah, and Lolo says he'll not walk out on us while Marcelino reassures us that he's here to stay...

This might be old news - I've been out of circulation for a couple of days - but Sportal are reporting that Taggart is planning a clear-out to partially balance the books. They've already agred to sell Jon Greening and Mark Wilson to the Smoggies.

They report that Andy Cole and Nicky Butt could be sold - I guess we could be interested in either of them. However, I'm guessing that manure will want a min of £10mm for each of them. I can't see us paying £10mm+ for Coley, and while I think Butt is a good player who could improve our midfield, I'd far rather see us paying £3mm for David Prutton, or £6mm for Seth Johnson.

I wouldn't mind Cole, I think Shola could learn a lot off him. Just get him to watch a '93 & '94 video to see where Shola should be aiming to be in the next two years. Pace & anticipation. Butt, no thank you, Lee Clark is better value.

DaveleF,

Clark and Butt are entirely different kinds of m/f player. I like Lee Clark but he plays in a position we have fairly well covered, if not totally convincingly. However, Butt plays in the defensive m/f role in which we are seriously lacking, imo. Lee Clark could not successfully fill that role.

Having said all that, I personally would not spend more than say £5mm on Butt - as I said earlier, I would feel more comfortable spending £3mm on young Prutton - and would be quite happy if we spent say £4mm on LC.
