CBS 2 News John Wayne Being Sculpted In Butter

Sculpture Will Weigh Close To 400 Pounds

DES MOINES, 6:39 p.m. EDT August 3, 2001 -- You know the Iowa State Fair isn't far away when Norma "Duffy" Lyon starts building her butter sculptures. This week she's working on a life sized sculpture of John Wayne. But it's a butter cow that normally gets the most attention. She's been sculpting a new cow for the fair since 1960, each couple years changing the breed she uses as the model.

Duffy uses a quarter ton of low moisture sweet butter to build her creamy creations each year. She spends days inside a 40-degree showcase-applying layer after layer of butter, a chunk at a time, to a wire frame.

In 1994, Duffy sculpted a 400-pound butter likeness of county star Garth Brooks. She's also carved out Grant Wood's "American Gothic" painting; butter Elvis, and "The Last Supper." That supper took more than 2000 pounds of butter to build.
