to clique or not to clique....

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

To be honest, I find this whole clique thing unsettling. How do you know if you're a clique or not? We now have a clique of one, is that a clique or a victim of MPD (multiple personality disorder)? If you are not clique are you chic? If you are clique are you a "one of those" or "one of these"?

If you are clique and don't want to be clique can you simply resign the position?

Finally if you are clique and it is chic but the chic clique is unique to only the chic isn't that a bit oblique? (Now I'm not sure if oblique was the right word here but I was on a roll).....

is it a clique critique???

This whole BBS is a clique. I bet there are only about 30 people who post regularly. The questions is - should we go on a recruitment drive to get in some fresh opinions?

The characteristic of a true clique is adopting characteristics (language, dress, behaviour) that excludes other people who might reasonably expect to be able to take part in the activity. The language is (sometimes) Geordie - but that is hardly exclusive because we are after all NUFC supporters - and non-Geordies can understand the vast majority of what is written. There are jokes shared by some but not others - but they are not used in an exclusive way.

In my opinion two positive things make this BBS not a clique. 1) If you post a question it is not ignored just because you are not a regular poster. Of course some people post a lot more than others - just as well for some of us who live outside the country or we'd never know what was going on. But we even tolerate Superkev, a Makem, and Lancaster Red, a manure (though I have not seen anything by him for a while. 2) If you go to the Straberry where the BBsers usually meet (back left if you can squeeze in) you get a warm welcome.

I think a large number log in but don't post regularly. For me, I'm here almost every day but just don't post preferring to just read. Do I feel part of the clique? I think its just feeling a part of a group of people sharing the same goals that is to see our team do well season in season out.

Serves you right, Lynda.

I'm all for it (no surprise there, eh). At the last count, I think I am a member of 3 cliques, tho it could now be 4 (excluding the "Lynda Clique" - should that be renamed to Veuve Cliquot?). I'm not sure about a clique-of-one, but I suppose even Syme has to be in a clique somewhere.

Is it possible to have "nested cliques"? For example, when we're listening to a match on the webcast, we might have The Straabeeries, the Adopted Geordies, a couple of Cliques-in-Exile and so on (even Syme's Aahm on me own). Eeh, it's tricky this cliquey stuff.

well said Sounder.... and I would expect Lynda has learned a valuable lesson as a newcomer to the BBS... we are a big happy community made up of one thing, our love of NUFC.... to clique or not to clique!!!

Talking of cliques, anyone know what's happened to the 'Chic Clique' from the New Forest? They seem to have lost interest since they visited the Strawberry and discovered that Pit Bill, Screacher, Softie and me weren't Richard Wilson, Mick Hucknell, Warren Barton and Pierce Brosnan after all!! ;-{)
