So, since you have no debt and the rest of the EU's tax money paid for your stadium, what's your excuse for being so tight?

They have 'no debt' my arse. That club is seriously on the breadline.

£5 + 70% of ground on concessions + free tickets= never being able to sign players like Laurent Robert.

Breadline? Not quite.Prudent, almost definately. But if we had bought Arca, phillips etc for £10m + would that make them better players? Should Marcilino have been bought for 3 empty barr pop bottles?

Nah sk, max I would have paid is 2.

Hind sight, is that looking at someones arse or looking through your own?

It is a valid question on whether you get better players if you pay more. More established, less hungry players will cost more. Unestablished hungry player may be bargains. Reid has done superbly well to pick up Phillips and Arca and deserves praise for it. He has also bought the likes of Fireguard and Nunez for slightly more money and they've been a disaster. Reid must deserve criticism for that too.

If you spend a million, say, and it is complete disaster then you can only lose your million. If you spend £6m you can lose it all too. It seems though that players don't go from a one number to nothing, they go from one number to 75% of it. Marcelino has proved the exception to that, but generally the ins and outs havne't been too far apart. Dumas, Maric, ferguson, Domi, Goma, Hamman have all gone for roughly the same amount they were bought for.

Every once in a while you strike lucky. We paid over million for Andy Cole but got 6 times that back. Dyer has cost us £6m but we will more than recoup that if he leaves.

The problem for a manager is how to keep his team improving when they get up to the top. The last few seasons Man U have spent fortunes on Stam, Yorke, Barthez, Veron, Van Nistleroot in an effort to improve. Yet they do seem to be at least maintaining their supremacy. Of course they are doing this AND trying to maintain a youth policy although it does seem to be slowing down as it comes ever more difficult to be worthy of a place.

I thought Maric would be a huge success having seen him play so wonderfully in European games. I though Ginola would be wonderful for the same reason. Most of the rest of our other foriegners I have to admit to not knowing that much about until they arrived. I have grown to be suitably cynical until I see them for myself.

I've seen Robert on the box and I again have the buzz that I had for Ginola and Maric. He's special, which is why've we've paid so much for him. Valencia and Bayern were interested in Robert implying that if he was a disaster we'd have a potential buyer.
