Can I use my 1955 style Summicron lens hood with a Summitar?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I'm getting a 1950 IIIf with a Summitar 50. Will my M3 Summie lens hood work with this lens, or do I need a "barn door"?

Thanks, experts!

I don't have an answer for you. I only wanted to tell you what a wonderful lens the 50mm f/2 Summitar is and what a beautiful character it has. I shoot mine wide open, w/o a lens hood, on an M3. See: http://www.ravenvision.com/peterhughes.htm

Peter: Pretty good advertising for the lens - and you!

Steve: (Sorry, got so excited by Peter.s pictures I forgot the original question. If no one else answers tonight I'll see if I can look it up)

A Summitar takes a A36 lens hood (the outside diameter is 36mm). A Summicron takes a E39 screw-in lens hood or A42 clip-on lens hood (the outside diameter is 42mm). So no, the lens hood will not fit. My inexpert opinion based solely on hearsay, is that a lens hood for the Summitar would be a requirement. The reason they made it so big is that flare is a big problem with this lens.

Cheers,

John,

Of course you are right. A Summitar is a 36. I should have remembered that having had a IIIc for years.

It just went right out of my brain! Sorry for the wasted bandwidth. At least I got to see Peter's website! Great stuff there...

The Summar O.D. was 36mm, but the Summitar was (like the Summicron) 42mm. SOOPD fits the early Summitar, while SOOFM fits either the Summitar or the Summicron. Incidentally, it also fits the 50mm f:2.0 LST Nikkor.

No, I am sorry! Sartorious led me astray as I did you! Lager has again set me on the straight and narrow. The last Summitar barn door hoods (SOOPD) were even labeled for both the Summicron and Summitar. The filter size is E36 not A36 as Satorious writes. There are three different styles of front rim on the Summitar and only the last has the flat groove which accepts the spring loaded ring of the SOOPD or the clips of the later Summicron hoods. So you may still be out of luck. It would be easy to machine a groove in the lenses without them if you are not fussy.

Hanging his head in shame...

Credit where credit is due. Bill Mitchell and Lager have set us on the straight and narrow.

Thanks,

I donīt know a thing about the summitar, but Iīve just begining to use my Elmar 50/3.5 (1948), I just got some color prints from the lab, and even I canīt tell much about color since poor printing work; resolution, out of focus rendition and all frame uniform quality are great, it must be a good lens for portraits, and selective focus at 3.5 has a good look, the problem is that is so unpractical to use, Iīm talking about changing f stops. Peter H. you have a great colection of portraits, good work, wich of those are taken with a Summitar?
