fair use...West Nile Makes Its Way To Ohio
Health Officials Are Taking No Chances
CINCINNATI, 9:34 a.m. EDT August 2, 2001 -- The potentially deadly West Nile virus is now officially in Ohio. State Health Officials say that an infected Blue Jay has been found in Lake County near Cleveland. At this point, no human cases have been found, but since birds can infect mosquitoes and mosquitoes can infect humans, local health officials are taking no chances.
Two summers ago was the first indication that the West Nile virus was in the United States. That is when dead birds were falling out of the sky in New York.
There have been no cases reported in the Tri-State area, but precautions are in place. Health officials have been taking samples from mosquito traps around wooded areas, homes and standing water.
Since mosquitoes can breed in about a week's time, the best deterrent is to eliminate standing water on your property.
