Lens pouch for 50mm 'cron

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I love using the Domke F-5XB bag. But, the 50mm and 35mm 'cron lens that is not mounted on the body must rest by itself in the deep recess of one divider space. Alas, I dare not toss my flash or meter in there for fear of scratching the lovely little 'crons.

Can someone recommend a little pouch for the 'crons? I'd like it to fit like a glove and be of minimal thickness, size and weight. Just enough to precent scratches.

Thanks.

There must be a commerical product for this. Locally, I just had them made. I knew this guy and his wife, ex-hippies from the 60's [still drove a microbus with flowers] who makes a living from leather work. Came back from Nam and started a simple lifestyle. He did a great job. He also knows about cameras. Told me what kind of leather to choose so the lens wouldn't be damaged. I have used some of them for decades now and he was right. It got too crowded here and he moved to Alaska. So somewhere, north of Fairbanks, is a guy who can make a wonderful case for you.

I just made a couple more last night, since one of my oldest similar bags, pushing 20 years, in yellow argyle, developed holes-- I take cotton GAP socks, the colored kind, worn out at the toes, turn them inside out, and run a couple of lines of stitching across about 3/4 inch above the end of the heavy ribbing, near the foot, cut off below that line, and turn the now-one-end-sealed ribbed tops inside out, making stretchy tubes. They protect as you wanted, are cheap, and stretch to fit any lens (my 85/1.5 Canon lives in one), but hold the small ones in place as well. When I mentioned this before, someone said he had a lint problem doing it, but I never have--maybe because I use old, well-washed socks. I've even got one made from a (bigger) camping sock top that holds a Viso with the 65/3.5 Elmar attached.

I added a couple more removable vertical partitions inside my F5XB. I had some extras from a photo backpack...but I'm sure they can be bought from numerous sources including Domke.

The Op Tech pouches work great for this. The one you want is the mini size SOFT POUCH™ -PHOTO/ELECTRONICS pouch. From the picture on Op Tech's web site they look square, but once you put the lens inside, the pouch really molds to the shape of the lens. Personally, I do not like the "Snoot Boot" pouches as well as the Photo/Electronic pouch. B&H has them.

Jay:

I am sure that Domke can provide them. But the ones that my friend did were better. My friend was an Navajo [at least in part; won't get into genetics here]. Will the ones from Domke have sacred symbols in bead work to protect the lens? Leica lenses deserve a work of art to surround them. I always try to support local people when I can.

Maybe I'm being incredibly naive but won't the ones that Leica supplies with new lenses work? Of course they may not be seperately sold or priced more than others.

I went to Wal-Mart, the little boy's clothing department and picked up a packet of 4 pair of the smallest low top athletic socks I could find...under $5.00. Use 'em singley or doubled up. They work great.

Thanks Bob, the Op/Tech SOFT POUCH is perfect. I'll order one straight away.

Great idea Mike, I can clean my sweat with it too. I recomend those can thermogloves that are sold in supermarkets.

I tried the sock thing a few years back and ended up with *A LOT* of lint in and on the lenses and cameras. Never again for me! Plus you might get fungus with the used ones :-)))

I use the velvet pouches my SF-20 flash, and loupe came in. They are perfect for the 50 and 35 Summicrons. Too bad Leica does not make them available separately (though they would cost a bomb if they did). Anyone see anything like that in the market? Little velvet drawstring pouches. The one for the loupe is especially nice-it has a padded base, but is not bulky at all when shoved into a camera bag or pocket.

Jack, do you think talc would help?

OK, Jack, fess up. You went out and bought _new_ socks, didn't you? It takes a bunch of washing to get out the lint, which is why I only use worn out ones.
