Only if you like Frog n Horsemeat sarnies

Come to mention it, my brain does feel rather spongy today!

Well at least he'll get some real meat rather than having to eat frogs and snails. And his breath will smell better without that disgusting garlic. And he won't be falling over bicycles with bags of onions hanging from them.

Also he can ask Bob Murray "Do you 'ave a lissonce for thees managaire?

Robert will have been well impressed with the climate on his arrival last night. As the rest of the country/universe was enjoying/suffering from a heatwave, it was about 55 degF and p&ssing down up here. Bad start!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Get rid of him now before the winter sets in I say.....if he's half as professional as the other french players we've had then he'll engineer a move for himself as soon as the weather turns and we'll be a fortune out of pocket for it...

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

well he's done nowt useful yet, typical french waster I say

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Interesting correlation here Gav.
When Bellamy signed i was wasn't overjoyed. You were not unhappy. Bellamy has a questionable personality.Bellamy plays in silver boots.

Robert is signing and i'm not unhappy. You were are not happy. Robert is French .Robert plays in silver boots.
What will happen? You have to say being French, as history has proved, doesn't work for us. Any bets on how long it will last before Valencia are 'chasing' him?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

I'm just convinced this Robert signing is a bad mistake and waste of money, i'm hoping i'll be proven wrong like I imagine you are...

I feel the way we fought off Barca and Juve for the signing of Bellamy shows how the world views him :0)

Buying a player who actually fits in to a position we need filled, had experience last year of Champions League football, looks like he has three shots at goal per game in CL games, had 4 assists in CL to go with his three goals, this guy is the dogs best friend.

I wish he didn't wear silver boots as we probably won't be able to tell him and Bellamy apart now.

I'll console myself by thinking it might depend on how well we're doing.

If we can more than hold our own in the league and have a few breaks in Europe, there might be a bit of incentive to hang around to see how things pan out.

Or is that too naive - as soon as there looks like a chance of a financial killing, he'll be off ?

In which case, I wouldn't touch another French player with a proverbial.

If he's crap i can claim it was Bellamy then? :-)

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

He might be a good player Mac but why is he with us?? if it's just for the money as the length of this saga seems to indicate then he's gonna be another Marcelino for us and we can do without that! i'm after players who've got it all to prove and who are happy to stay in England....yup, like Bellamy!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Jesus, back to his website: they could have forgiven if he'd gone to Parma because they are a big club whereas we are a small club like Montpellier with no ambition and no chance of winning anything... Do these people know that they are playing in the Intetoto too and that part of our excuse is that we lost two of their ex-players because they were basically soft as sh.te?

Bit harsh Gav on Roberts. I'm delighted that we've finally got someone to fill the left side of midfield. How many times last season did we say that the team is lop sided and too predictable as the attacks only come down one side. If we hadn't signed Roberts then who would have filled the left wing position. I can't think of anyone who would be willing to come to Newcastle to fill this position. Okay so he tried to get the best deal money wise and wasn't successful. But he's coming to Newcastle, not Valencia, not Barcelona, not Bayern Munich or AC Milan but Newcastle and I think that this is the start of the toon revival!!!! AM

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

But he's not gonna stay AM.....listen to Arsenal if you dont believe me...wasn't it only yesterday that Wenger was saying that it's pointless building a team around french players these days because they are in such demand that they rarely stay with a team for more than 2 seasons....and we all know Wenger is no mug....The only way he'll stay is if he's crap for us....IMO we would've been much better served getting a hungry young player (like Stephen Glass!) and playing them on the left wing instead....

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

The thing about Stephen Glass is that he scored that goal against Man United on what was the coldest day of the decade...

You must get confused for a lad with liver failure Gav, you're getting so jaundiced ;-)

Until proven otherwise on the pitch Laurent is the second best striker NUFC has ever signed.

Perhaps the only thing to cause concern is (almost) sharing a name with our man-marking wonder Charvet!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

That might be the case but then again whenever we sign a player are they guaranteed to stay for their contract duration. If we stop signing players because they MIGHT leave in 2 seasons time then we won't sign anyone. The point is if we qualify for Europe next season and perform well in the cups (i.e. we improve as a team) then the players are more likely to stay, and we can only improve as a team if we sign quality players. Damned if you do and damned if you don't!! AM

Re the "he'll be off in 2 years time remarks", Shepherd addressed this point head-on in his Sunday Sun interview. He said he more or less expected a foreign player to want to move after a couple of seasons. He said the object was to sign them for 4 and then either re- sign or sell after 2 seasons.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Let's not slag him off before he kicks a ball. I for one am genuinely excited about this signing. Dougal reports that the PSG fans are gutted that he's leaving and that's got to be as good a barometer of a player's ability as anything.

What did we lack last Season? well quite a few things really, but the glaring hole in our gameplan was a lack of pace - now that we've Bellamy and Robert that weakness has been addressed.

Hats off to fat Freddie for his perseverance. (you see Jonno - I love the guy really!)

"Roberts", awaymag, which one, Harry, notre ami?
