George Burley was after him...

Roeder watched him play for PSG and said this ;

"French striker Laurent Robert will complete his £10 million move to Newcastle United in the next 24 hours and be unveiled in front of the St James's Park crowd for tomorrow's Intertoto Cup clash with 1860 Munich.

And United will have signed a real gem - according to their former skipper Glenn Roeder.

The West Ham manager just happened to be in France on Saturday night running the rule over a different player when Robert made his final appearance for Paris St Germain in the goalless draw with Lille.

And Roeder was quick to make notes about Robert, bearing in mind West Ham entertain United on Sunday, September 23.

Indeed, Roeder will warn his new £3.5 million keeper David James that Newcastle's latest acquisition is a dead-ball expert.

The Hammers boss told me today: "I don't want to say too much about the lad because we play my old team next month.

"But I have to say that he takes a terrific free-kick. He can even ping them in from 35 yards.

"And they go in like an arrow. But that's not all. He can bend them over the top of the wall and also round it. He can really vary his free-kicks."

Robert scored 18 goals for Paris St Germain last season - 15 in the League and another three in the Champions' League.

And Roeder added: "He not only scores goals but he makes a lot as well. He's not a dribbler like David Ginola but he crosses a wicked ball around defenders."

There were reports coming out of France that Robert was jeered by the Paris fans when he was substituted after 73 minutes.

But Roeder insisted: "This is not correct. The St Germain supporters loved him. As far as I am concerned, the boos were for the manager for bringing him off.

"Obviously it was a difficult game for him on Saturday night and he had a bit of a quiet match but when he's on his game he's a really good player."

Roeder would not say which player he was watching on Saturday night. But like Ipswich boss George Burley he did admit that Robert "was out of his League."

And this from a club which has banked £30 million in the last six months by selling Rio Ferdinand to Leeds United and Frank Lampard to London rivals Chelsea."

In a nutshell, Don Hutchison, but 4 times more expensive.

Roeder ... like Ipswich boss George Burley ... did admit that Robert "was out of his League."

It'll take a massive club to buy him then ...

One very big difference. You may have missed the Champions League goals he scored. What do you mean, you don't care about Europe ?

Perhaps you will be following it up with a £25 million swoop for Andrew York and Jonathan French of Barry Town?

No thanks. They're just Don Hutchison, only forty times cheaper.

Can't be, Don Hutchison has never played in Europe has he ?

If you've gorrit, flaunt it.

Even if you guys have been the dog's bollox since time began, which seems to be the impression you all have, but is debatable IMO, how is the result of the game on Sept 25th going to influence that outlook ?

Obviously, if you lose, it will be just a minor blip, but if you win it'll equally obviously be incontrovertable evidence of your superiority on the inevitable climb to the highest levels of the footballing stratosphere. (Why use two or three simple words when there's a bottomless pit of verbal diarrhoea to be plumbed ?) Us poor buggas have nee chance.

Enjoy.

Now shurrup. :-)

French lad at work says he's an excellent player - Free kick specialist and a great crosser of the ball - loves to attack and is 100% commited- basically what's been said in the papers.

Source was pretty spot on about Dumas, Goma, Domi and Guivarch - to the point of mentioning their attitudes. Robert likes a challenge is all he'll say at the moment...

but i reckon that's a positive thing...

;)
