Bobby Charlton - When I'm 64

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

"When I'm 64" is a new R4 series with a different guest approaching this milestone every week. Ashington's own Bobby Charlton was first up and it was an interesting chat.

The family was packed with footballers including, of course, "me Uncle Jack played for Newcastle", 2 uncles at Leeds, somebody else at Bradford and others besides. He speaks of rationing during the war and "me dad had a whippet - he used to go out poaching". (It's nice to know that someone in the family had something approaching a proper job!) Actually his dad was a miner - be a surprise if he wasn't in Ashington.

Hunter Davies (64) the interviewer, asked about the hairstyle. Sheepishly Charlton said "When I look back - I don't know why I did that"!
