BTS United States Map

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Ok, got the map, and I colored in all the states to give us room to write on. It's the size of your computer screen, I can't have it too large, or it will be a problem.

I need to know what part of the state you all are in. NW, SW, Center, Panhandle, etc. For right now I'll put our names on each state, and hopefully we won't have too many names in the smaller states! I know Alison is in the UK, I'll find a map and fuse it on to ours. As long as I have a white background, I can "float" things on it and then merge layers. What about Canada?

It won't take me long at all to finish it and put it on BTS website. And I can always take the copy in my PC, add names, and replace the one over there. If we want to do close ups of just state maps, we can also. But each state would be it's own picture over there. Ok, that's it for now. I'm having fun.

Answers

Cindy-if you look at the "mitten" of Michigan I am right in the middle of the bottom of the cuff.......about 30 miles from the Indiana border.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I'm in Indianapolis, which is pretty much right in the center of Indiana. If you do individual state maps, I live on the SW side of Indianapolis, about 5 miles north of the airport.

I'm glad that you're having fun doing this. :)

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Cindy, Awesome! Wonderful! I am in Ohio, southeast of columbus, southeast of Lancater. thanks for doing this! Tren

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

North to South, I am in about the middle of Illinois, over toward the East side. Thanks for all the hard work, Cindy!!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I am in the vicinity of Madison, Wisconsin. If you are doing the individual state maps, you can put me just barely on the outside of Madison, on the west.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Cool, Cindy! I'm in SW Orygun, about sixty miles north of Californicate, and fifty miles east of the Prolific Ocean.

JOJ

well, I'm north of Joy and south of Julie... about the center of Wisconsin... just offset a bit to the east...

hello to so many hooiser... I was bred and raised Hooiser... went to Ohio after marriage... had a couple of Buckeye kids and then Kansas and then Wisconsin...

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Hi Cindy,

What a major project. Thanks for all your hard work. I'm in Massachusetts just a little northwest of Boston and just a tad below the NH border.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

You can put my dot just a little northeast of Polly's.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Far right side of Texas almost in the gulf, up before the tail though :) Near Houston if you want to look on a real map! Vicki

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I'm in SW Ohio about 45 mins. northeast of Cinti. This should be interesting!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Put my dot just west of Lake Tahoe in California.....Kirk

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I'm in a little wide spot in the road in northern wisconsin, just shy of the UP border. There is a section of the northern boundary that is a straight line, at an angle. I'm about mid-point on that line, just south of the border far enough to not qualify as a Yooper.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

If you look at the mid-coast area of Maine, where the mouth of the Penobscot River empties into Penobscot Bay, I'm east of the mouth of the river in Penobscot.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Here's what I got so far. Tell me what ya think. Need more people. I just popped it up on my site for now. Will wait for Jim to put on BTS site later.

Looks good! I think that Julie lives frightfully close to my ex- inlaws!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Nice job Cindy...........this is fun!!!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Great idea, Cindy! You can stick me just east of ST Paul, and since my name is so big it'll probably extend into western wisconsin, which is perfect since that's where I've been for the past seven years.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I just noticed that the map shows the U.P. of Michigan as being part of Wisconsin. Did the Cheeseheads stage an invasion? hehehehe

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I probably did that Sherri! I had to take the "paint brush" in the program and clean up the states, they were full of words and lines. I have one map intact I go by, but I didn't notice. I did forget some of the states names through. (and had to look) I take it UP is upper penensula? I see now! I did give them allot more land didn't I. I can fix that. So a good chunk of MI is on the other side of the lake huh. The Cheeseheads will have to get over it when I take back the land!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Those ornery cheeseheads!!! We are in the lower right-hand corner of Ohio, just opposite the point of PA and MD where they come together, very near the Ohio River, but out of flood stage by 1200 feet!!!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Find the center of the state of Arkansas , then go up north about a fourth of the way. I quess you'd call that north central. I live near Heber Springs. Sherry

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Looks good Cindy!

Leave that line out -- the UP and Northern Wisconsin belong together, eh? There was a movement, long ago when I was a teenager, for the UP and Northern Wisconsin to "secede" from their states and form a 51st state. Wanted to call it Superior. It failed though, obviously.

Hmmm, looks like those of us in the center of the country could all converge on Polly & Cass for a big party. Something to think about, maybe next year?

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I can't believe I had to get out an atlas to tell you where I live,I thought I lived across from Ohio, put my husband said Pennsylvania,Well we could both be right!!!If you see that little intersect on Lake Erie, near Terry's dot, where Ohio meets Pennsylvania at Ashtabula, put my dot right across from there,In Canada,of course wherever that goes on the map thingy.Thanx Cindy!!!!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

I'm on the southern edge of Washington, looks like about 1/4 mile to oregon from here. I'm on the western edge of the eastern side of the state, about 20 miles to the western side. Bout 80 miles east of Portland Oregon on the Columbia River......Of course we just put the house up for sale so I hope I can update our location in the near future.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Hi everyone--I haven't had too much computer time lately, what with putting up veggies, and our fair was last week. I'm about 45 miles south of Toledo,OH. Just find the western end of Lake Erie and go down a bit.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Cindy,

We are WAY up in the far NW corner of Ohio. Almost on the line of MI and only a few miles east of IN.

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Love the map, Cindy. Although with my poor eyesight, sure am glad I have a 25" T.V. screen!! Obviously it's "commune central" out there in the Midwest :-)!!!

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Cool, Kirk, I used to backpack in your neighborhood! Desolation Valley, up Pyramid (I think) Creek, sometimes, or in thru Fallen Leaf Lake other times. Awesome area. Too popular, though, even back in the early 70's

Marcia, thanks for the grography lesson! I have an Old Town Penobscot canoe. Do you know where the name came from?

Good job, Cindy. If you get too many more people, though, you're gonna have to use smaller print. No wonder this is a password site )

I wonder what a statistician would make of the big concentration of folks in the Kentucky to Wisconsin area?

JOJ

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

Vicki, what do you mean, "up before the tail"?

JOJ

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

OK, do the map again and tell me if I'm close. Jz, did I get it in the right area? I don't know what part of the state Sheepish is in, I just put it in the middle. Ohio is getting full! And the Cheeseheads have retreated back to their boundries, sorry Joy.

Teri in Canada, did I get close?

-- Anonymous, July 30, 2001

John, are you above or below Yarrow on the map?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

We're in NW Arkansas, probably NW of Sherry.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Yikes! I think you put a bit too much of Wisconsin into the UP! Oh, well, it probably doesn't matter . . .

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Ya-hey, who's counting anyway? When I drive up to visit some people from the barn at their place, the road drives from Wisconsin into the UP, back into Wisc, back to UP, back to Wisconsin, all within about a mile and a half.

Truck horses to the UP and stop at the gas station that's smack dab on top of the state line and you can jump back and forth from state to state in the snacks aisle. I noticed that they didn't put the cheese case anywhere near it tho. (insults! It's actually located in Michigan rather than Wisconsin!!!)

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Cindy,thats it exactly!!!!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

I'm WAY down there in deep south Texas. If you follow the Rio Grande River (border of U.S. / Mexico) to the Gulf of Mexico, I'm about 60 miles upriver of the mouth.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

JOJ...Old Town canoes are supposed to best one of the best makes in the world, very rugged. They're named after the Penobscot Indians of Maine and, I think they're built in Old Town, Me. Although they might build them in Bangor now. Old Town is just north of Bangor. How did you end up with an Old Town canoe way out in Ca.??

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Opps!!! Sorry, JOJ. I meant Oregon. Guess I need a western geography lesson!!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Cindy, I'm in the north east of Florida Jacksonville to be exact!! I love seeing where everyone lives it helps to see where ya'll live when talking about gardening etc. Thanks!!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Hi, just got my computer fixed. I am in north west Florida, just about where the FL is on your map. My computer quit the same day Jim sent my password,I've been like a junkie in withdrawal. I've got a couple of questions, but I am going to read through the forum to see if they have already been answered. Daryll ps,I sure got a lot more work done with the computer down.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Wow.I didn't realize so many of you lived in or near Ohio. You all can come down to my place in KY this fall maybe? Gee,Diane can just drive down and pick everybody up on the way! Let's see,you want to come when they have Court Days at Mt Sterling or the Mother of all Yard Sales that stretches from Ohio to Alabama on Rt 127? Both are really cool events.

Anyway,Cindy already placed me,but you just look for Cave Run Lake headwaters in eastern KY.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

I updated the map. I got Alison in the UK on. I just put Debra in Ks, Amber in WA, and Jay on there. I don't know if I got them in the right place or not but I can change them. Ok, gonna go outside and work on my kennels, this is really fun. I love doing graphics.

After we are done with the map, you can right click on it and "save as wallpaper" for your desktop. Too cool huh. Then you can see everyone all the time! With the UK on there, it's still 800x600. Keeping that size is important.

It took me forever to find a map of North Devon, England on the internet! But I did. Man, the pics of down there are beautiful! Beaches, gardens, pubs, B&B's, oh it sounds soooo nice.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

I forgot to tell you, when you are looking at the map on the site, you can go up to VIEW, FULL SCREEN, and you can see it all at once. Then just put your mouse in the middle box on the top right, and it's says RESTORE, and it goes back to your regular browser. TA TA.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

I am in south east Louisiana above the lake along the coast right next to Mississippi and in a few months we will be just south of Memphis in Mississippi.

This is cool.

Namaste, Judy

Cindy I live in south east Indiana not far from Ohio. Franklin County Indiana near the Brookville lake. Indiana Country Friend Jack Bunyard

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Converge away, Joy and others!! I'd love to have you all over for a visit!! How about during strawberry season!? (Hee-hee!!) Did I tell you guys that that ornery Cindy tried to give me a strawberry from the buffet when we went out to supper while I was in KY?! Still think she is a doll-baby though, 'specially after all this work!

Now Sharon, just when is this Mother of all rummage sales?! I know I'd be frazzled by the crowds, but it sounds like a cool idea. Wonder if the Ex would loan me his panel truck.... I put in for my vacation from Friday, Sept 14 through Monday, Oct 1 - wooo-hooo!! Eighteen glorious days!! My luck, I'll probably be neck deep in 'maters to can! Have to be home on the Fridays to go to the foot- ball games, but that still gives me lots of time to drive and visit - anyone else up for a visit - to or from?! Don't know if Hubby is taking any time off or not.

It is kind of neat to see all of us in the middle of the country! Hey, isn't hendo somewhere near JOJ?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

So Cool!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

oh, oh, Cindy, I'm in northwest New Jersey. Love the map.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

How in the world am I going to find New Jersey!! At least you have a little name Dee!

If you look sideways, Polly and Cass are eyes, Sherri is the nose, and from me to Diane is the smile! I need to move Polly and Cass just a wee further apart for the eyes.

Now if I can just put wee tiny people jumping up and down waving! he he he.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

O.K. Cindy............are we getting a little punchy??? ;>) You are doing such a great job!!! Sharon...........I thought you said you didn't want us all grouping at your place, scared me off!!! If I had something other than an old truck I would just take you up on it and head out on a road trip, it has become one of my dreams........get out and about and meet you all and see your homesteads. Right now the photo page will have to do and I sure am enjoying it. Joy......why not some pictures of your garden and the community site?? That whole thing really fascinates me. And Julie.......still no pictures of you??? All these mystery people had better show up.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2001

Perfect Cindy! And Joe, between me and the tip, looks like a tail? No? :)

-- Anonymous, August 01, 2001

I found it Dee. And I found DEL,RI,CT and MD. I cleaned up that whole east coast. But I can't put in the state names, they're too small. Is that big island Manhattan? It had sunk into the ocean so I put it back. And I put the hook back on Trev's state. Is that WI/MI line better now Joy? That long penninsula below MD, is that Virginia? Looks like it on this map. Whats that called? I'm getting a geography lesson here. I updated the map at the site this morning. We still have quite a few missing.

I went searching in my bookcase and found a good map of the US in my Readers Digest "Our National Parks". You live in the mountains, Dee. It would be neat if I could show the mountains on this map.

-- Anonymous, August 01, 2001

Yes, Cindy, the line looks better. But Julie should go east at least 1/4 inch.

Diane, I don't have a digital camera nor a scanner. I know I could get some pics put on a disc at the camera shop, but haven't gotten around to anything. My mother took back her camera that she lent me because she couldn't figure out how to work it (we'll see if she does any better now). So now I have an unfamiliar camera to be messing with. Julie has similar excuses, except that her faithful camera is in the shop seeing if it can be fixed. Hopefully, it only needs cleaning.

-- Anonymous, August 01, 2001

Looking at this map I can understand now why it's 12 hrs. or more before I can read any new responses on BTS. You guys are all still SLEEPING when I'm up and online :-)!!, Trev, Dee and myself are the only ones who are awake at a "normal" hour!!! HaHaHa! Probably you guys are awake later, though.

-- Anonymous, August 01, 2001

okay, where am I suppose to be looking to see this map? and pictures? I missed something. I saw the map as you were working on it in the beginning. Someone tell me, please.

By the way Cindy, my son noticed that NJ wasn't marked. Simple things kids notice, huh? Glad I could fit. Now you have to hope no one from Delaware wants to be encluded.

-- Anonymous, August 01, 2001

Dee: scroll back up through this thread and you will see a link that Cindy posted..........says Map.

Oh, I love it! Thanks Cindy.

-- Anonymous, August 02, 2001

Love your map! I haven't posted here because I haven't had anything important enough to say, but I enjoy reading yours when I have time. You can find us on the MI-IN line, about 6miles from the little jog where the MI southern border makes a jog where IN and OH come together. (6 or 8 miles from Ohio). Now that I have so confused such a simple issue, aren't you glad I don't post often? Actually, we are somewhere in the middle of the "T" in Terry's name! About 20 miles south of diane, to whom I owe a visit I have been promising. Love her place! See how I run at the mouth? Must be tired. Cora-Vee

-- Anonymous, August 02, 2001

Cindy,

I am truly impressed with what you've accomplished. This is terrific. Keep up the good work and thanks for including me.

P.S. The "hook" on Massachusetts is Cape Cod and I'm sure all those people on the Cape appreciate being put in place.

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2001

OH Cora, you don't have to have something important to say! We just jabber on most of the time. I'll get ya put on there sometime today, I've got someone comming this morning.

Trev...Yeah, after all, where would all those folks go on vacation!

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2001

Good job Cindy; you located me just fine. Really cool idea, gives me a perspective of just how far apart we live from each other, yet are able to communicate so easily with one another. I think this new fangled internet idea will catch on? Have a good all all.

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2001

Great job Cindy, you got me exactly where I am. Boy there sure is a whole cluster of folks right together, lucky you.

Namaste, Judy

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2001

Ok, got Cora and moved Julie a bit. I did view, full screen, then I right clicked and "set as wallpaper". Now it's on my desktop with my icons on the bottom. Wanted to see if it worked and it did. Anybody know where anyone else thats missing lives?

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2001

I THINK John Leake is in the middle of Wisconsin, maybe put his name right above Yarrow's. He hasn't checked in -- must be busy with his MIL!

I know what STATE some of the other folks are in, but not WHERE in the state. I guess we'll have to wait until they check in! :-(

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2001

Would you please put Phyllis in under Cass and I?

-- Anonymous, August 04, 2001

Hey, place me in northcentral West Virginia, The spot between the panhandles would be fine. Sorry it took me so long to look at this thread!

-- Anonymous, August 04, 2001

How did you end up with an Old Town canoe way out in (Oregon)?

I found it in Eugene, at a canoe retail store. They also sell them in Ashland.

It IS very rugged, although I got pretty discouraged the first time I took it out. I mainly bought it for white water canoing, and was out at a mere lake. I pulled it gently up on shore, ate lunch, and when I came back, the little baby waves on the lake had caused the volcanic pebbles on the beach to grind clear though the outer layer. Oh, well, now I don't have to worry about keeping it looking "virgin".

East of Everett, WA (north of Seattle)....about half way between Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains (approximately.)

This is so fun! Thanks!

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2001

Hey JOJ, we camped at a BLM campground east of Ashland. Great spot but we had a big lightning storm that evening....also lotsa rain!!! Ashland is an interesting town....never been there before. Nice part of the world you live in.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2001

Hey, we have a Wenonah Canoe! (Sundowner model touring canoe.) Isn't that made in Minnesota? We bought ours at REI in Seattle! (okay, enough posts from me tonight..)

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2001

Hi Cindy--WOW, lots of work, but it will be great when it's done. I live about 20 miles south of Olympia, and slightly east. Sure glad you're having fun with this, and I hope it doesn't become a burden.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2001

Change me on the map, I am going to Goldendale, Washington. It's pretty much next to the Oregan state line almost in the middle of the state. My husband is an electrician and started to work today on the construction of a power plant. We will be there for about a year and then who knows. This is what we got an RV for, to travel around with the construction jobs. I'll be joining him in about six weeks. It's kind of scary leaving a job of ten years, but at almost 55 it is a great opportunity to do something different. Wish me luck.

Namaste,

Judy

-- Anonymous, September 27, 2001

Good Luck Judy!!! Must be kinda scary, too. But I wish you happiness and togetherness!

-- Anonymous, September 27, 2001

Sounds great, Judy........I know you didnt seem terribly happy with where you are now.......best of luck!!

-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001

Judy, we'll be practically neighbors! (Maybe a coupla hundred miles away, in reality.) Goldendale is cool....you can cruise on down to Maryhill Museum and Stonehendge in about an hour, I think.

-- Anonymous, September 28, 2001

Thanks for your good wishes, I'll keep you posted on my adventure. I think it will take me six days to make the trip, me and four cats in a pickup truck, oh joy, I have to get them some tranquilizers. My husband told me I can't bring very many books because the weight would give our little Sonoma a hernia, so I have to choose wisely, and pack a few smallish boxes for my sons to mail to me along the way.
