Reid was quoted by a club insider as saying "F**king hell".

Rumours that the local playground, the Stadium of Light, was being auctioned to Barratt Homes in a bid to meet the record breaking fee were firmly unconfirmed.

Sanderland (sic), famous for hosting the Chinese car making giants "Coycarps" and for being in the shadow of football's sleeping giants Newcarsel Union, has not seen such media interest in the area for many years.

Resident old person with a good memory, Joyce 93, recalls "When I was a bairn [small child] I remember something about the town having a game with someone else. Now, let me see...it might have been abroad in a competition or something. Sorry, it's such a long time ago. Is the post office open yet?".

Charwoman, Bert Murray, was unavailable for comment although club insiders insist the Kevin Dire deal is far from finished. "We would love to have Keith join Sanderland, it would be a dream come true. The rumours along have rocketed season ticket sales, and we're expecting to break the 200 mark any time now!"

Kenneth Connor is 84.
