A Rarity - The Stephen Glass Interview

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Two pages in the Saturday Scottish Sun with Ian King, headlined Signed by Dagleish , Shaped by Gullit, Snubbed by Robson , Saved by Vialli. I shall just post the parts that may be of interest to us , but in it he never has a bad word to say about his time at Newcastle, The journo emphasises the point that Glass is very shy and this may explain quite a lot that has happened during his stay.

On Vialli signing him, He laid out the plans for Watford and it excited me, I felt deep down that if Vialli wanted me that much I must be doing something right. Its not a case of having my appetite back really, I never lost that hunger to play , I just was not getting picked at Newcastle.

His time at Newcastle, Right now I relish every morning here the way I did at Newcastle the first season. It is often forgotten I started well there playing 30 games.

On his managers, Dagleish -: Kenny left Newcastle after my 2nd game and that was a shock to the system, Kenny was my hero , not for what he did on the pitch , but because of the man he is, the public image is miles off the mark, its the same with Alan Shearer. They are both private men and they keep their family life that way - some dont like that. I think the mark of someone like Kenny is when you know he sent a personal fax to the Caldwell brothers when they made their debuts for the u21`s. He makes the young boy`s feel special, he made me feel special,. The first thing he did on leaving Newcastle was to impress on the players to do their best for the new manager.

On Gullitt. I enjoyed my time under Ruud Gullitt., a lot of the players did not get on with him, but he was good for me , like Dagleish he had a real aura about him, even when his popularity faded. I enjoyed the training - he made me a better player, if you cannot learn from someone like him you have a real problem.

On Robson-: The appt of veteran boss Robson hauled them out of the depths but Glass feared he was going to sink without trace, I hope I have improved as a player at Newcastle, yet never before did I have the feeling of not being a regular.

Himself and the Supporters, I`ve grown up both as a player and person playing in a city like Newcastle. Its a place where people spend everything they have on supporting that team and you must RESPECT that It was a pleasure to play for them, I will never forget seeing entire families in the replica kit, Mum, Dad and the two kids.

Himself-: When Gullitt was sacked I was injured at a bad time, the new manager came in and turned things around and he stuck by the boy`s who done well for him, I understand that. My problem is when we went through a leaner spell I wouldn`t get a chance or if I did I `d do well enough and then next game I was out again. That get`s you depressed but you vov never to let it grind you down, eventually you hope someone will come along who does value you and it has happened now, it took two years right enough, You know your manager has a pull when you play Inter Milan and Sampedoria pre season,

Lots of other stuff but that is the bits that concern us.

What a difference from so many others' first interviews after they left. I hope he does really well.

Yes, best of luck, Stephen. I feel quite tearful now....

I still can't help feeling we've wasted a real talent with this lad, not to mention a player with the right attitude.
I truly hope he does brilliantly for Watford, and also resurrects his international career. Nice blerk, deserves better.

Our loss is Watford's gain. Best of luck to the guy. Thanks, Buff for posting that.

Thanks for that Buff. I'm convinced we screwed up badly by not keeping this lad. I based my feeling purely on his ability, but it's clear that his character and attitude are right-on as well. I've said it before - I think he will transfer out of Watford for £2m plus and it might be a big plus.

Samp are in a right mess, they have been banned from Serie B

Dan, that clearly explains his problems at Wolves and subsequent bitterness at NUFC. A broken heart is hard to mend for some players.

Thanks Buff. Hope he does really well at Watford, he deserves it. An excellent player and a nice lad as well.

Glass could be the man for Watford, but if we have high aspirations, then i don't think he quite has it. Shame that.
