Is Dyer actually worth £25 million?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I know it's hard to put a price on players in these mad, bad days of 50 million quid transfers, but is Dyer worth anything like 25 million? Not a lot of Premiership experience, hardly a great goal scorer, reputedly dodgy attitude. I know a lot of Man Utd fans were distinctly underwhelmed at the thought of buying him, largely cos they think he's not much more than a porn star with a bit of pace (and I'm quoting).

He is good - he has turned matches for us. The opposition can't ignore him. And he is still young. That might make him worth say, 10 million. (He has had two long injuries so might be injury prone - but I'll discount that against his youth.)

HOWEVER, for various reasons that have been much discussed on other threads, we would find it very difficult to get an equivalent replacement at the moment - even if we can pay the going rate. So his value to us is more than 10 million.

ALSO, I really do think that YBR wants us to be a success. He is trying very hard to get a left sided attacking player to give us a balanced attack - and we have been turned down (scorned, spurned, rejected are other words that spring to mind). What would be the point of finally managing to get a good left-sided attacker if we went and sold Dyer? (I am assuming that we will get Robert when he and his agent have finished being the center of attention they feel necessary to atone for PSG's "treatment" of him.)

So, in my view we must set Dyer's price very high. Manure are now spent out for this year so only Leeds would really be in the market (apart from Italians/Spaniards and for them Dyer is still potential rather than the real goods). 25 million says to Leeds "If you want Dyer then you are going to have to sell big and disrupt the team you have put together". That's exactly how it should be. Its a bit like Monopoly really. If you don't have a lot of stock, but you do own a valuable asset the last thing you do is to sell that because someone else could buy it and make a set and then really clean you out. (Unless of course you are really broke, which we aren't, then you should give up any way.)

It depends on whether they are resigned to losing Bowyer or not. O'Leary seemed to be pretty sick of the whole court case thing and said he would like to dump the players and the issue. Mind you, he's a lying twat :-)

One other point here....he's damaged goods, sure he may be "training" but no one will pay that kind of dosh for damaged goods.

Second. look at what he has to offer. Youth, England International, speed, creativity.

What doesn't he do... score many goals, pass very well, and isn't a ball winner.

But the first three and his "potential" is probably enough to get over!!!!

Softie, Bowyer will not go down. Woodgate, if the court case goes ahead ( and I can't believe there can be a fair trial now) Woodgate is likely to go down. Woody hasn't trained at Leeds since the last trial fell through & turned out for one press day at Leeds training ground. The word is, if we have a crap season, Leeds will get first crack at Dyer, IN PX we get Woodgate plus two others, my guess is Bridges.

Of course the whole thing could change by next year. If Leeds do implode, for what ever reason, then they won't be able to afford Dyer and they won't want him if they really have to re-build. I still think 25 million is a good price because I think we can (just about) tell everyone else to go to hell, we are not a selling team. My only real concern is that we do not have a true ball winner on the team in midfield who is still able to run. But I suspect that YBR doesn't really want to play that type of football so there is no one that could tempt him to do an 'exchange' for Dyer.

DlF I was referring to an interview on the telly where O'Leprechaun said how he was tempted to let Bowyer and Woodgate leave the club in order to get rid of the distraction, hadn't thought about them actually being found guilty, although the Archer case has almost convinced me that the rich might just get treated the same after all. As I said before, however, O'Blarney isn't very good at telling the truth, is he? Has any of his players ever commited a bookable offence?

I'm not sure you're being entirely fair there Softie. Compared to his predecessor, O'Blarney sounds like Mother Theresa. :-)

It seemed like very time I switched on the recent Open Golf coverage there was Whispering David O'Dreary being interviewed about his love of the game and his 'close' friendship with Lee Westwood and that tw@t Growling Darren Clarke.

I ask you - when switching on to watch Open Golf coverage who the hell wants to listen to the inane babbling of O'Dreary? It's bad enough on MOTD for crying out loud!

Rio Ferdinand cost £18m, that has to be the bench mark against which to assess Dyer.

Jeffers, uncapped similar injury profile went for £9m (ish)
