Full-Page American Life League Ad Warns Bush Will Have 'One-Term Presidency' if Stem Cell Funding Approved

The American Life League today runs a full-page ad in the Washington Times indicating that President Bush risks losing re-election in 2004 if he approves funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Under the heading, "The Bush Family Secret for One-Term Presidencies," the ad displays two side-by-side photos. The first, of former President George Bush, carries text saying, "Read my lips! No new taxes!" and is followed by text reading: "Campaign promise made: 8/18/88. Campaign promise broken: 11/5/90. Consequence: Single term ended: 1/20/93."

The ad continues, "During his 1988 quest for the presidency, George H. Bush made a bold promise to resist all pressure from Congress to raise taxes. His political base took him at his word and elected him. But within 22 months of taking office, Bush had caved in and agreed to raise taxes. The result: Even the threat of Bill Clinton couldn't reactivate his supporters sufficiently to re-elect him in 1992."

The second photo, of the current President Bush, includes text saying, "Read my lips! 'I oppose federal funding for stem cell research that (destroys) human embryos!'" Under the photo, text reads: "Campaign promise made: 9/22/00. Campaign promise broken: _______. Consequence: ________."

The ad continues, "During his 2000 quest for the presidency, George W. Bush made a bold promise to resist all pressure from Congress to release federal funds for stem cell research. His political base took him at his word and elected him. But now, Bush appears ready to cave in and approve federal funds for stem cell research. If he does, even the threat of Hillary Clinton won't ... re-elect him in 2004. You fill in the blanks."

Text at the bottom of the ad concludes: "Removing vital stem cells from embryonic persons always results in the death of a real, living human being. If you're a journalist, staffer, producer or President of the United States and would like more information, call 1-540-659-4171 and ask to speak with our president, Judie Brown. Now completing her tenth consecutive term in office" (ALL ad, Washington Times, 7/27).

Debra: I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Bush. The only campaign promise he's been able to keep is the one for tax cuts. Once that was done, there was little money left to support all his other promises. The military is complaining that they've been ignored, the education folks feel they've been sold out, the faith- based initiative thing has folks on both sides objecting, and the folks who counted on the tax cut are now balking at their $1.69 checks.

"...indicating that President Bush risks losing re-election in 2004..."
