Grand Island Woman Charged For Leaving Baby In Hot Truck

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) -- A woman who police say left her 8-month-old daughter in a hot pickup truck while she went shopping has been charged with felony child abuse.

Claudia Ramirez, 25, was charged in Hall County Court on Tuesday.

The baby was found around 3:20 p.m. CDT Saturday by a man and a woman who were walking by the pickup, Police Capt. Larry Trosper said. Saturday's high was 99 degrees.

No one answered a store page for the truck's driver, so the man and woman used a coat hanger to unlock the pickup door through a window that was open about three inches.

Authorities arrived to take the baby to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

Ramirez came out of the store with three other children shortly after the baby was taken to the hospital, Trosper said. She told officers she had forgotten the baby was in the truck.

All four children were taken into protective custody.

After being charged, Ramirez was released on her own recognizance and ordered not to see the children.

If convicted, Ramirez could face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

I wonder if a foster home was found that could take all four children. We decided recently to look into providing foster care and discovered that we have so many children that there is legally no way we can foster. Oddly, we could adopt. I worry about the little ones that don't understand why they've been removed or why they can't see their mom. I worry that they may even be split up.
