JACKSON -- Consumers Energy overcharged 64,000 of its 1.6 million natural gas customers during the July billing cycle due to a computer glitch. On average, the company overcharged customers by a total $6 on bills sent out July 20 to customers scattered across the state, officials said. The overcharge affected the price of the natural gas, where customers were charged $6.25 per thousand cubic feet of gas instead of the proper $4.32 per thousand cubic feet rate. Consumers began sending out corrected bills on Wednesday after being alerted to the problem earlier this week. All those affected will receive notice by Aug. 1 and any overpayments will be credited on future bills.
