to see a tackle like Robbie's last night ?

Presumably ever since he left ?

and how wonderful we look when he has a classy player playing in front of him ?

classic, but only moments earlier Solano had ducked out of a 50-50. It was as if Robbie was saying thats how you do that tackling thing. I think Barry Venison perfected the crunching tackle whilst Pedro must rate as one of the best trackers back ever to have played football.

So what is Solano's best position ? Seems to me Bobby's just showing him up playing him in a defensive role. The second goal was due to him fannying around, instead of getting shot.

For some reason I didn't enjoy the game much as a spectacle, and I can't really say why. If they hadn't got the third it would have been 'Surprise, surprise, we threw away another two goal lead, so what's new ?'.

Maybe it's senile tunnel vision makes me base my opinion of a game on things like Nobby losing the ball for the second goal, and Speed's miss, and the lack of creativity that sends the ball back as often as it goes forward.

My expectations still must be far too high. I expect them to look good as well as 'done good'.

Bit harsh, mate. Much of the second half was spent coping with the 1860 attack, which was variable in effectiveness. Nobby should have got rid sooner, but why didn't his teammates call man on? Maybe there isn't a Spanish equivalent shout. Plenty to improve upon, but 3-2 away in Europe against an established side with the number of our 1st selection players sitting it out is not to be sniffed at. And I thought it was very entertaining game with everything - goals, controversy, skill, balls ups, bit of attitude, dodgy ref and a win for the Lads.

Wow! We managed to win despite a dodgy ref too? Great! I think we need to work on doing good consistently before we can worry about looking good while we do it.

And the Spanish equiv of 'man on' is 'marca'. That's the extent of my Spanish fotty talk. ;-)

or even footy talk.

and Man off is "Marcy"

-- Anonymous, July 26, 2001

Of course, you're all right. It's me dreamer heed that expects us to show the likes of manure where to get off, every game, when common sense says be thankful for small mercies. And I obviously didn't take enough notice to remember which goal was Nobby's fault.

As an aside, 'Reports that United are about to sign French striker Laurent Robert from Paris St. Germain are not correct.' Chronicle page 51.

As if that proved anything.

Helluva tackle! over the moon that we've finally got a player at the back with a bit of bottle! now we've just got to sort out the rest of the team....

Robbie really whacked him, Shola has a bit of spirit as well. Mind you, when that German headbutted his foot as he walked past i thought Shola might have got injured...

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2001

Yup Shola has a bit of passion but he's shockingly slow at getting into the box....along with his inability to shoot, he's just not my kind of player...

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2001

Gav, if Shola was thje same as all our other forwards he'd be on the treatment table, his mobility and speed off the mark is nearly unique amongst our recognised forwards

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2001

I thought Shola looked class for the first thirty minutes then seemed to tire. He is going to be a talent.

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2001

Thats the first time you've seen him play this year isn't it Kats? ;)))

Mac, I didn't say I liked any of our other forwards either! I just think Shola needs to be able to strike a ball better and get into better positions.....his attitude is spot on....

he's still young, maybe a mix of Bellamy and Shola would create the perfect striker. Hang on Bellamy can't score proper goals...forget it :-)

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2001

Wait until his cousin gets a few runs in the side.

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2001

Softie's right - Richard Offiong has Shola's physical attributes but scores goals as well.
